Raw Milk Is Available In Sioux Falls SD. Do You Raw Moo?

Do you drink raw milk? I have been for four years now and I don't intend to stop. Raw milk is just milk straight from the cow. Conventional milk is pasteurized, homogenized and comes from cows injected with hormones and antibiotics. Conventional dairy cows are also fed a grain based diet to up their milk production.  Pasteurization warms the milk to a temperature that kills bacteria but which also kills good enzymes in the milk as well. Homogenization puts the milk in a centrifuge and spins it to permanently mix the fat globules in the rest of the milk. Hormones and antibiotics are said to pass through into the milk. Cows fed a grain based diet also contain a different biological makeup to their milk. So these things that conventional dairies do to milk alters it from its intended state. Some people consider raw milk to be unfit for human consumption and some folks consider it the best thing since before sliced bread. Here are a few links if you would like to read up and form an opinion.

I for one like my food orgainc and unaltered. So I actually have a milk man! My milk man Larry comes and drops off a gallon and a half of milk every week like clockwork. He also has eggs during certain times of the yer when the chickens are laying. If you would like to call and inquire about the receiving raw milk please call Tim Eisenbeis at 605-925-4661. Happy Grazing Dairy is based in Marion SD and is operated by a five generation farm family. Buy local and keep the money here!

I must share this ORGANIC story.  My wife grew up on an Alabama farm.  She tells the tale of her Dad hand milking the cows while she and the farm cats lined up on a bench in the stall.  Her Dad would squirt milk straight from the utter to her and the cats as a treat.  Can't get any more organic than that!   Now she won't touch milk... no way... no how.  Go figure.

John- That is a very organic story for sure! We are a little slow climbing on the organic food wagon here in Sioux Falls but the number of people clogging the organic food aisle is sure increasing lately.

It's been decades since I've had really fresh milk. I just remember how astounded I was at how good it tasted. Sadly, I haven't had another opportunity since.

I will surely jump at the chance when it presents itself again.

Pacita- If you really want it Google your state and see if there are any providers. This would be a good way to see if it is legal in your state! Raw milk is way better because you always have cream for your coffee and tea! :)    Merry Christmas!

I guess if you are going to drink milk at all this would be the best way to do so.  I have read so many reports of why humans should not be drinking cows' milk at all.  But then what do I know :)

Jane- I don't know but I can't imagine giving up dairy. I am not huge into meat so I do dairy a bunch. I have to get the protein somehow! All the stuff that they do to conventional foods made me give up everything that is prepared unless it is by me! Merry Christmas!

Rosalie, raw milk is something I'll definitely check into.  I did have it once years ago when on a family farm, but it seems impractical in the big city.  Anyway, I really like milk...thanks for this heads up and the links.

Nick- I went on a major health kick about 5 years ago and since then I have always eaten about 80% perfect. I try not to eat junk food but I do slip. Raw milk is one of the things that is easy for me to stick with. It is just yummy!

Rosalie, I was going to ask about the shelf life of Raw milk, but did a little research and found it to be 7-10 days.  While researching I did notice that there is a lot of controversy about its safety and that Canada & Australia has banned sale of Raw milk while there are 28 states in the USA allowing the sale.

The safety issue seems to revolve around; grass vs grain fed, pen vs pasture kept cows and how the milk was collected.  I think I need to do more research before I make the switch or give it a try.  I do eat yogurt which certainly helps promote some of the good bacteria we need.

Because of the diet I am on, I can no longer have dairy. But, if I wasn't I would much prefer fresh milk to the stuff they have in the stores. (There most certainly is a taste difference and a health difference)

Todd- That is for sure! I had some commercial milk the other day and it just tastes funny to me anymore! I don't know if I could handle life without milk, cheese and ice cream!

The last few weeks the milk has tasted different. Are your cows now in the pasture? If so, how long - all summer? will your cows stay only on this feed because my family - which loved your milk - will not drink it now because of the smell and texture at this time. I might have to cancel for the duration and get milk when the cows are back on other grasses or the fresh grasses work there way through and not smell any longer. Thanks for the info.  Kathy P
