A government big enough to give you everything is big enough to take everything from you.

One of the biggest issues I have when government wants to regulate just about anything is that what they want to regulate opens the door to more regulation and that creates a slippery slope.  A little regulation on one segment of the population ends up being a lot of regulation on a much broader population.

Today, a news report stated that the federal government has taken the states restrictions on the use of cell phones to the next level.  I seriously doubt that the average thinking American thinks it's a good idea to text while going 70 miles an hour down the highway.  I know I don't.  So, when states began passing laws that restricted texting it was much applauded.

Today, the federal government wants to go to the next level. No cell phone usage of any kind while driving.  I'll be the first to admit that I get annoyed with drivers who are so busy talking on the phone that they don't take off from or stop at traffic lights, they nearly run into you head on, they are swerving from lane to lane or they are just driving like a total moron.  I get it.

But, you can see how a simple restriction has allowed the government to open that door into a major law restricting the use of a cell phone while driving.  For those of us who make a living while driving, this could be a problem.  At the same time, I really wish no one used his cell phone while driving.  Pull over and find a safe place to check your calls, text or email your clients.  That's not the issue.  We can all agree on the dangers of cell phones and cars.  What this is, is another example of a government that overreaches it's responsibilities with its populace.  Even if you've gone to the trouble of installing a great wireless, cordless, hands free system in your car - too bad.

Think about that the next time you hear a politician talking about taxing the rich.  When they realize that the taxes consumed from the rich aren't enough, they are coming for you

If the USA took all of the money of every US citizen, it could not pay off the current national debt.  So, what would make the average American think that extremely high taxes on the top 10% of wage earners in our population will solve our debt crisis.  It won't, and it never would have.  It's a straw man argument created by politicians to form a wedge between citizens in this country.  Folks, just say no.  Any politician who would try to divide Americans along class lines is not worthy of the office they seek or hold.

Ask yourself, "By what moral authority does any politician have the right to determine how much money an individual can keep?  Who has empowered our politicians to take the money from one group and give it to another?"  And remember, when you're pondering these questions that the restrictions on texting (basically a good idea) was the slippery slope that will ultimately restricts your ability to use you cell phone in your vehicle no matter how you use it.

Our nation is great because our nation is free.  If we are determined to seek the government's oversight of all parts of our lives, they will take it.  But, I promise you, you won't like it.

Mike, how does it matter who regulates these laws? As long as they are fair, it should be acceptable.

Yes, talking over the phone while driving is our life line, but that's since cell phones were invented. We did work even before that.

Just my 2 cents.

I am pretty sure I am in favor of such a law.  No quick reminder to pick up a gallon of milk or a 6 pack of beer is worth a single human life.  We already have way too many ways for things to ruin more lives that the ones involved in the tragedy.

Oh, I totally agree with the dangers of using a cell phone whether texting, talking or surfing while driving.  My concern is this, when you allow a little government regulation into your life, you open the door for massive government regulation in your life.  Personally,  I wish everyone would park their cell phones when they get in the car.  This also includes a gps.  It's just as distracting as a cell phone.   I think that would be best for all, but, it's cell phones today, the radio tomorrow, conversation the day after, etc., etc., etc.  Cell phone restrictions are just the premise of my blog.  The overall theme is when we open the door to excessive government regulations we ultimately pay a major price in lost freedoms.

I agree with you, Mike - in this day and age any new government intrusion is another step too far.

My original comment exceeded the length of your post.  I will publish separately.

Mike, Things are indeed going too far.   The problem is we write about it and blog about it but nobody actually DOES anything about it.  Maybe we should try and stop it before it gets even more out of hand.   And let's not give away the farm... only the drone we already have.

So true, Linda.  I say, let's exercise term limits on our politicians in Nov 2012.  It's time to throw the garbage out on both sides of the isle.

Term limits are a smart way to go. It should not be a lifetime career for our politicians that keep us in trouble.

The US prides itself on freedom, but really it is only financial freedom to work your butt off to make some money.

Everything is else so restrictive that it is alost insane!  I think most of these lawmakers need to have experienced living in other countries where people are really free to live the waulity of life they want to without the government micrmanaging the way we live.

As soon as you walk out your front door, you better be aware of everything around you in case of a lawsuit.

Too much government intrusion will make us a police state eventually. When does it stop?

Hi Mike - So you don't want cradle to grave help from the government?  Can't imagine why not:)

Love Conrad's comment - "cradle to grave government" is exactly what this country is turning into.  Ugh.  So sad.

Well said, Jennifer.

Thanks, Nicholas.

Conrad, it seems like that's where we're heading.  As long as 48% pay no taxes but still vote we'll keep sliding down this slope.

It is sad, Virginia.

Not sure how the federal government has the Constitutional authority to pass this law.  Seems clearly to be a state's rights issue.  But I get - people need to hang up and drive.  The worst drivers during the evening might be drunk, but during the day it is the cell phone users.

Rob, I don't know how many times I've nearly been crushed by some moron on a cell phone talking or texting, but at the same time, I totally agree with you.  It should be up to the states.  It wouldn't bother me at all to never use my phone in the car, but even if I don't somebody else will.  So the dangers continue.

So what's next, banning talking in cars, period?  The real problem is texting, I don't know how many times I've seen kids (and some adults) texting while driving, paying little or no attention to the road.  If you're in an accident the police should be able to check your phone for texting to discern whether or not you were driving with your eyes on your cell phone screen, but to ban talking is just plain stupid.

Ref taxes...the "moral authority" comes from the 16 Amendment.
