Photos and Copywrite and Blogging

(hold cursor over photos for captions!)

If ever you want to brush up on copywrite issues, thoughts, practices, and lessons...I recommend checking out Lenn Harley.  She's shared a LOT of food for thought and I learned early on that I'd best be careful with photos.  In fact, in most cases, I'd just be better off sharing my own,

even if I'm not the best photographer in the world.

It's amazing how a photo can brighten up an otherwise tame subject.

Add to the action, and

Add beauty.

You've got to be kidding, right!?

Provide emotion.

This is actually a canned photo

Or just entertain.

A lesson in perspective

We Grandparents all love bragging rights.

Ta Da!!

Parents too.

Brown milk - it's an inside family joke

So my point is - if the nature of your blog isn't purely statistical or charts and graphs and other serious topics, don't be afraid to mix it up and get your point across.

After all, a picture's worth a 1000 words...

Cara, I agree. Photos can liven and brighten up a blog post. We just have to make sure we use our own photos or have the proper authorization to use others.

Hi Cara,  You're preaching to the choir here !  Still amazed at how many people think that anything on the web is free and not the property of someone else !  Have a terrific Holiday Season !

Cara - great reminder.  Personally, I use my own or go to the free internet sites which aren't copyrighted.  Or, I will ASK permission to use someone's photo.

Photos/graphics are probably the most "lifted" content on the internet. I think its highly likely that many people who have copyrighted material, also more than likely have a means to track its use -- they will catch you--- its not an "if", its a "when". Don't do it, don't do it, don't do it. If you, however, are the aggrieved party the link below may provide you helpful information of #1 what your rights are and #2 how to claim it as your property and file a DMCA take-down notice.  Unfortunately, this type of theft is proliferating.  Good post!

Cara, I think National Geographic has been hip to these facts for a long long time.  Pictures can be a great vehicle to ride through the content.  I just plain don't use pictures other than my own.  On rare occasion I will use someone else's with permission.  I quite often find my pictures on other people's web sites.
