When the "Help" Menu Doesn't Help...

Tonight made me a little crazy.

I had spent much of the day writing blog posts for a new client and it was time to upload them to her Wordpress site. She sent me a login and password and everything looked fine. I copied the first post, formatted it for bolds and headers, entered the SEO information, the tags and the category... and then tried to upload a photo.

Where was the button? man yelling in frustration

No button. So I saved the post and started searching. Click here, click there, click everywhere. OK, I don't like help menus but I'll try that. That was good - when I went into "advanced" help it told me to click the button above the editor.

I'd love to, but there's no button.

Keep searching...

Finally, down at the bottom of the page I found a link that said "select image." This has GOT to be it!!

Nope. But I did find the answer to my dilemma. It said I don't have permission to upload files.

Hopefully my client will check her email in the morning and go give me permission...

For now, I guess I'll work on something else.

And meanwhile, keep this in mind ... if you hire a copywriter to write and upload blog posts for you, check twice and make sure you're giving them permission to upload images.

Marte, that must have been sooo frustrating! A friend of mine who owns a genealogy business had his web designer die and he didn't know the passwords to change anything on his site. It took him weeks to get everything in order.

Good morning, Marte - OMG, how frustrating and how stupid.  It doesn't even makes sense...if someone gives you access via user name & password, why would there need to be a separate authorization for photos. Stupid.  Sorry about the annoyance.

HA!  Wouldn't surprise me if the site owner isn't authorized.

Hi Marte - That seems so odd--you would think if you had the password you could do everything. Glad you figured it out!

Is there anything more frustrating than computer programs that won't work the way you think they are supposed to?  When my kids were little, the sewing machine would frustrate me like this :)  Makes me want to throw things LOL

Mike - Yes it was!

Maria - that happened to a friend of mine, too. Her "web guy" was one of her employees who knew more about computers than she did, so she had his name on all the "who is" stuff and she had a devil of a time proving that she had a right to the domain name. She even had to send a copy of his death certificate. Then... the site was hosted with a small local company and they would NOT give her the user name and password to get in and make changes.

They insisted that they'd do whatever changes she needed... but they entered her phone number incorrectly and refused to fix it.

Finally, I helped her deconstruct the entire site and reconstruct it - now it's hosted at GoDaddy.

This is why I nag everyone about keeping control of their websites.

Debbie - I don't know. She didn't give me her own log in info - she set up access for me.

Lenn - Her old posts have photos, so I think she just missed something in the authorization process.

Peggy - It appears that there are different levels of involvement. I don't know. I have a Wordpress site, but I'm sure no expert onit.

Mimi - Oh boy - you brought back memories of trying to take the sewing machine apart to get out a thread stuck under the bobbin mechanism... Yes, it does make you want to throw things.

I guess this proves that no job comes without frustrations and delays?  I am a wordpress ignoramus.

Marge - I believe you are right. Frustrations and delays seem to happen - the only way to avoid them is to just do nothing.

So you can post a blog, but it won't let you load a picture? That seems a little weird that you have to have permission to do that seperate than even posting.

Todd - She had to go back in and give me "admin" status before I could upload a photo. That made her nervous, since she doesn't know me yet - this was our first project together.

I thought it was odd, too. I wonder if all Wordpress blogs are like that, or if it's a particular theme she's using?
