Wunderbar Cookies - Springerle For Santa

“A northern cousin to biscotti, springerle are as impressive looking as they are simple to make.” - Sarah Karnasiewicz

As we approach the time to decide what cookies we will leave for Santa, more suggestions have surfaced. Sarah Karnasiewicz, at  The Wall Street Journal has written the lead article for the Off Duty section that was published over the weekend.

Sarah writes:  “Every year, around this time, many of us face a crisis—a cookie crisis, that is. Deciding what treat deserves star placement on your holiday spread can be a fraught matter. (Is your niece vegan this year? What statement do coconut flakes make about you? Will the in-laws approve?) While you, like me, may have arrived at a repertoire of greatest hits over the years—like the molasses crinkles my grandmother cribbed from a Wesson Oil cookbook, and the candy canes from Betty Crocker's Cooky Book that my mother taught me to roll across our Formica counter—each December still demands a new challenge. So, this year, I decided to finally tackle what I've long considered the crown jewel of all holiday cookies: springerle.”

After you read this article on Wunderbar Cookies, you will want to add them to your list of new family favorites and perhaps Santa’s favorites as well.

Springerle forms are available on the internet or from your favorite kitchen supply stores.

What a gorgeous photo. Not only do I love the color of the flowers (with the pop of yellow in the magenta), but their contrast against the color and texture of the burlap is startling.

Roy,

Christmas cookies are such a great tradition. We don't realize how lucky we are to have these tasty morsels at our disposal on a daily basis. Long ago in history, a cookie was a special treat. Few people had sugar and if they received one cookie at Christmas time, they were lucky. I read about those stories in books.

When my mother was alive, she shared so many stories about the Great Depression and how lucky we kids were.

I would give anything to have one of my mom's home made cookies once more.
