A Mighty Church Grew

Old Ebenezer Baptist

According to the Ebnezer Baptist Church website it was the first African American church in this part of Northern Virginia. Located in the Town of Occoquan, land for the church was purchased in 1881, only seven years after the town itself was incorporated. The first cornerstone was laid on the first Sunday of May 1883

The congregation was founded by Reverend Lewis Henry Bailey, a former slave and member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Alexandria VA.

Since the original site could not support a needed expansion, a large tract of land at Minnieville and Telegraph Roads was purchased. Several years ago the Family Life Center was built - only a very small portion of it can be seen in the photo below. Worship services were held in that building and, as you can see, construction has now begun on the new sanctuary. There is no doubt about it - Ebenezer is a thriving member of the Prince William County church community.

What a wonderful church. I belong to a Presbyterian church in the country that started in 1861 and has been the same beautiful little church all the way through and up to now.

Hi Karen,

Thanks for your telephone call! I really enjoyed talking to you!

That Church is mesmerizing. I can't stop thinking that it was built when Abraham Lincoln was alive and becoming President. To think how many prayers were said and answered in that church. Or how many weddings and funerals. This beautiful church stood the test of time through so many unsettling periods of history, including wars and civil unrest. If walls could talk, can you imagine what they would say? Those floors and pews must be stained with tears.

This church is an historical landmark and should be honored and respected. What a wonderful story. I'm so glad I read about it. You did a great job covering the story. Thanks Karen.

Patricia
