The Lower West Side is now known as Tribeca.
The name Tribeca stands for “Triangle Below Canal Street”.
Tribeca encompasses the area south of Canal Street, between Broadway and West Street, continuing south to Chambers Street.
The once dominant industrial base vanished by the 1960’s leaving behind large amounts of empty commercial space. This empty space attracted artists and a large scale conversion of the space into upscale residential homes.
It is one of America’s most fashionable and desirable neighborhoods, well known for its celebrity residents.
Some of it’s well known residents have included the likes of Billy Crystal, Derek Jeter, Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert DeNiro and both Caroline Kennedy and her late brother John Kennedy Jr.
Robert DeNiro along with Jane Rosenthal co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival in 2002. This helped to bring back the much needed revitalization to the district after the September 11th attacks.
