Why don't people like cats?

So I am wondering why some people vehemently despise cats. I have heard so many comments as to they are sneaky and and too independent. More say they are dirty.

All I can say to this is -REALLY? They are sneaky because that have to be to catch pray. That is what is in their nature. Why is that a problem? They are independent but that is what I like about them. However, mine seem to be very humainzed because they HAVE to be around me on me or in my vincinty.  As far as dirty..ummm I don't think so. Cats are very fastidious when it comes to cleaning. Now I do admit my cats have some fishy breath but its from the food people hello.

I also get a few comments that they aren't very loyal. Well I have seen it first hand that they are loyal. I have seen the love they give me. I have seen the love they have given to other cats and the pain they feel for the loss of other cats. They comfort me. They do vex me. They do give me a bit of anxiety when something is wrong with them. I would not have it any other way.

There is not a single iota why people should not like a cat. They are beautiful.

I do not like cats because they make me swell up and sneeze violently! I am so allergic. They love me though. When I show a home they want to always come rub up on me. It is like they are trying to kill me- LOL- Just kidding. I like them- from a distance.

Interesting timing on this post. Our beautiful black cat, Lazerkitty is struggling to stay with us and not let kidney disease win.  I think that people may not hate cats, they just don't understand them.  I can't say that I understand them either...but I do appreciate their independent streaks and their glorious beauty.

I've heard there are cat people and dog people but we have had both. They bring much joy to our lives.

I am completely ambivalent towards cats. They ignore me, I ignore them. They are rather like house-squirrels without the squirellyness. I'm crazy about dogs though.

Kristi- well you can't blame the cat on your allergies :) My grandma is like you they like her but she is crazy allergic to them she likes them ok enough though. At least mine.

Sham- well whatdya gonna do.

Mona- From the bottom of my heart I hope and pray your precious kitty makes it through. I know how upsetting it is to have a sick cat. I had to put one of my cats to sleep 3 years ago due to cancer. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

Team Knowles- I have had both growing up. I love all animals myself. I just have a special affinty to cats :)

Malcolm- at least you don't hate them. :) Dogs are good too.

I think "Why don't people like cats?" is an extremely broad, and wrong, question. Some people don't, that's true. Some are allergic, some just prefer dogs, snakes, birds, whatever. However, several years ago cats overtook dogs as the nation's favorite pet, so "man's best friend" is now a cat.

Until recently I never "liked" cats because they wouldn't come when called, wouldn't greet me at the door when I came home from a terrible day at work, wouldn't climb up on my lap and stay forever, wouldn't.......

Then, on Thanksgiving Day 2006, a feral black cat came by. It looked hungry, so I gave it some meat and milk. It inhaled it all and took off.

On Christmas Eve 2006, another feral black cat came by. I thought that it might be the same cat. My wise old grandmother always said that the way to a cat's love is through food. I fed it. It stayed.

I tried very hard to make it an indoor cat because I know the life span for outdoor cats is short, about four years. I was being successful, but at about 2:30 in the morning it would howl to go outside. And it was a horrible howl. I thought the neighbors would call animal control and report me for abusing a cat. So I always let it go outside whenever it wanted to go outside.

On September 20, it was hit and killed by a car. I was crushed. I rushed down to the local animal shelter and got a replacement cat. An indoor cat. Zoey the Cool Cat.

I'm currently a cat person, but I still love dogs, birds, snakes, fish, guinea pigs, hampsters, rats, mice....
