Prospecting Disaster (True Story)

By
Real Estate Agent with Century 21 Brandt Wright Realty, Inc.

It Lets you know when your prospecting may have made a wrong turn.  (True Story)...

After getting the first voicemail I was intrigued, It was a collect call from the Tallapoosa Country Jail, simply saying collect call from "It's me Steve, accept the call".  The problem was this was on my voicemail, and for the life of me I couldn't figure out who it was.

The second call I answered and it says "Steve, Call my wife please"...  Okay, so I attempt to accept the call not knowing who this is, but certainly if its someone I know the least I could do is call his wife.  Unfortunately, when I attempted to accept I receive a message saying my service provider does not allow collect calls.

Now, a third call,  (this has begun to consume my whole day at this point) with calls in, and me with calls out to see if any friends were missing their husbands.  Finally at the end of the third call, I say... I don't know if you can hear me, but I need you to leave your name so I can call your relatives.

Lastly a fourth call, (mind you this was over the course of 5 hours and periodic calls), this time he says "Steve, Press #4).  I do and it is asking me to prepay for the phone call.  Yes, I did...  and on the other end the conversation goes like this.

  • Steve, sorry to bother you like this, but you gave my wife a card a while back.  She's still wanting to buy a house, but look Steven, I'm in a bad spot.  They took my phone, and I can't reach any of my relatives, all I had on me was your card...  I'm thinking could this really be happening??? Seriously!!!
  • Okay, it is now day two.  I have spoken, with his mom (who is terminally ill in the hospital), his brother-also in the hospital for a rattlesnake bite that happened on yesterday.  A few other family members who aren't hoping to help him soon.

All in all it's a sad situation, but wow... What a wake up call that I need to revisit a few prospecting techniques. If anyone is bored and wants to talk to this fella, I will glady give up any precuring cause.  Just leave me your number in a comment and I will be glad to pass it along the next time he calls, which should be in about 28 minutes.

Thanks for reading, and good luck prospecting !!!

Lol, it sounds like your card ended up in the wrong hands. And no, sorry, I don't want Steve's number, he's on his own.

Steven,

Great story!  I can believe it.

Between you and your dad you should write a book!!  Tucker Tales

I would buy copies for client gifts!!

Heard your sister is moving to town and needs a place to live.  I am sure you will be able to find her a great location. :)

Great first blog, but I noticed you haven't written for a while. The Activerain community thrives on new members and all the new articles you write.  We have some great challenges this month.  Would you consider posting another article this coming week?

If I can help with ideas, let me know.  It's what I do for new members.
