So the cheese moved, now what?
I just returned to my office after hearing bad news from my doctor.
I am a runner. Make that WAS a runner. At 61 years old I won about 10 gold medals for 5Ks in my age group this year. I came in number two in the 8K. I’ve consistently logged approximately 100 miles each month. Every morning I jump out of bed at about 5:30 a.m. and prepare for my morning run. I’ve solved many business problems, come up with more wonderful ideas than any other time and place, and forgiven many slights on my morning run. Thanks to being a runner, I have more energy and confidence and I’ve been able to manage my weight. I love running!
A few weeks ago I starting having lots of pain. I thought it was my hips. I just knew it was simply getting older and perhaps getting a little arthritic. I kept running. Finally last week I was in so much pain that I had to admit defeat. Running was excruciating and even walking hurt. In fact, I could find no comfortable position. I called and made an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon, and stopped running (temporarily, I thought.)
Today after examining my X-rays, my doctor said, “absolutely NO more running!” Seems I have degenerative disc disease and running will never again be possible for me. Thank goodness my husband had insisted on going with me. I cried a little and had a few bad thoughts about the unfairness of it all. I stubbornly insisted that NOTHING will ever do for me what running has. The doctor’s suggestion of biking or swimming fell on deaf ears. My husband was there to console and comfort.
Funny how things work. I returned to the office and opened my emails. The first one I read was a newsletter from a wonderful trainer and friend. It was all about failure and success and how a single failure often leads to bigger and better things.
I'm not sure how this will turn out but I will make it a positive thing. I will hve seven hours every week that were used for running. I will find wonderful ways to use the gift of seven hours. I’m already planning my strategy and looking forward to new activities. I will make the next several years wonderful and successful. I think maybe I’ll work on my golf game and buy a good bicycle.
