Bethel - The Little Church That Survived The Civil War

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Executives

Bethel Chapel

Bethel Church has been at the same intersection (Smoketown and Minnieville) since it was built in 1850. Originally, it sat across from the Sunoco service station in what would have been the middle of Smoketown Road. In 1977 the Bethel Historical Society had the building moved to its present site on the grounds of Bethel United Methodist Church. The society oversees and maintains the building.

Land for the church was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Burr Glasscock - he was a member of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors. Building materials were gathered by neighbors.

The two major Civil War battles at Manassas and the lesser battles in the area had a devestating effect on the area and parishoners. The Glasscock's home was used as a command center and the church served as a hospital and stable by both armies - it needed considerable refurbishing at the end of the war.

The church now rests in a small pastoral setting on the grounds of the "new" Bethel United Methodist Church. To learn more about their ministry and mission see the website at Bethel United Methodist Church

I don't remember seeing this church, my office in Woodbridge is on the same intersection, I guess I need to be more observant. :) Great post.
