From my Back Porch: Where should Medford and I duck Winter in February? (a comment carnival)

Jay's decorated houseAgain this morning the temperature is hovering around the freezing mark, and it’s raining. This could cause some serious traffic problems during this morning’s rush. More importantly, to this codger anyway, it could cause some senior-sidewalk-slippage problems as I make my way to the morning meeting at the café!

This is Minnesota. This is December. In the Twin Cities the average high temp in December is +25ºF, low +10ºF with the mean temp at +18ºF, so I won’t complain about +32ºF on the 14th of December (but I will watch my step). I include the current weather conditions for the benefit of our “sun country” gentle readers—and revel in their comments.

We don’t get the most snow in the nation (lower 48 states)—a puny four feet on average, we don’t get the coldest temps in the nation (lower 48 states), however Embarrass, Minnesota probably did at -60ºF! What we do get, and what I love about this state is four distinct seasons—and even more importantly—something to complain about!

I can’t imagine living where it is usually 85 and sunny:

“Morning Jay,” Medford greeted as he sipped from his organically grown, fair trade glass of coffee-on-the-rocks, “how ‘bout that weather?”

“Why must you ask me that,” I answered, “it is, as always, beautiful, and you know that.”C'mon Up

Actually, that sounds pretty good—except for the iced coffee. Maybe about February, when we are a just a little tired of winter, I would consider a visit to sun country—just a visit, mind you.

A challenge to all our friends in the various sun country states:

Where in “Sun Country” and why should Medford and I visit this coming February when we are well and truly tired of winter?

jay, You need to come down to beautiful Polk County Florida. In Feb in should be the low 70's with plenty of sunshine. Great time for bass fishing.

Jay (great name by the way) - it's been quite chilly here in the mornings. A couple of days ago it was 46! I couldn't find my hat and gloves so I had to suffer through it. The high that day was only 68.

OK Maureens & kk: Ohio, Colorado & Michigan don’t quite qualify as “Sun County” mind you—but I would have been disappointed had you not commented.

Don't tell anyone but we don't have sun in February... I was shocked when I moved to Akron from Green Bay... it can be depressing... some years the weather people will give a count of how many days straight we have gone with out sunshine... the great lakes sitting north of us, we are in a valley.... sometimes as the sun is setting we get glimpses to know there is still a sun.  I have very light sensitive eyes as a kid in WI I hated the sun on the snow...  but that's what sunglasses were made for. I think Michigan gets sunshine in the winter...

Jay & Francy: 46º? Hat? Gloves? Hmmph—‘round these parts that checked Bermudas and flower print shirts in that weather! We’ve never been to the Desert Southwest…one vote for Phoenix.

MM: November is our cloudiest month—a local radio station regularly challenges a Seattle station for the most cloudy days—and regularly loses.

Chris: After we got up off the floor (from laughter), we can now reply—neither of us knows a 5-Iron from a tire iron! Having a golf course in our back yards would be hell-on-earth—imagine having to speak in whispers all the time.

Sedona, Arizona - There isn't a lot of golf and hiking is the main sport.  I figure I'm gold there, my gene pool not only welcome, but it will flourish!

Of course, you two have to know I'm going to say Florida... the question is "where in Florida?"  The answer depends on what you like to do or what you're looking to do while on vacation?  Relax or be active?  Beach or theme parks?  Fishing?  Boating? Give me some ideas as to what you're looking to do during your vacation other than get some warmth and sun back in your lives and I'll try my best to pick a good spot in Florida.

Leanne: The Ambroses (both of them)  and I enjoy historic sites, old homes & buildings, a combination of self-guided activity & relaxation. We don't much like being scheduled, tourist traps, or crowds.

Jay & Med - based on your likes, I'd have to say that St. Augustine would be your best choice.  Of all cities in Florida, St. Augustine offers the most history & historic sites (including Spanish Quarter Village, Bridge of LionsCastillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas), old homes & historic buildings (including Old St. Augustine Village, the Casa Monica Hotel and St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum), the Lightner Museum, and plenty of self-guided tours you can take at a leisurely pace.  It's also a good place to relax and enjoy the warm Florida sun! Here is a virtual tour of St. Augustine's Historic District.  Even though it is somewhat of a "touristy" area, it didn't feel like a tourist trap to hubby & I when we went there a few years ago.  We went during the spring/summer and it wasn't crowded but I can't say how crowded it will be in February.
