New Year in Key West is Amateur Night
Back in the day the locals who have a propensity for drink would call New Years Eve, "Amateur Night" The streets are closed off and "travelers" (alcohol in a plastic cup) are allowed to drink on the streets and sidewalks. The police just make sure the "amateurs" don't hurt themselves or anybody else. Drunken crowd control must be a part of police training because they are excellent at being accommodating but stern. New Years is another excuse to wear costumes. Fantasy Fest costumes are recycled making people watching really interesting.
Instead of a "ball drop" like Time Square in New York City we have a twisted sister version. The Pirate Wrench drop at Schooner Wharf, a Conch Shell Drop at Sloppy Joe's and a Drag Queen Drop at Bourbon St. Pub/New Orleans House.
The craziness that goes on in Key West is always fun. I will keep you up to date on more happenings on New Years in my next Blog.
Stay tuned!
