In my opinion, Charlie Dresen is one of, if not, the finest Videographer in Active Rain. Some folks have told me he's so good that he might discourage some of us from video production. I disagree with that premise.

After all, when you want to be a better skier, you should spend time skiing with better skiers. The same with other activities that involve skill and practice. It raises the game to a new level. We shouldn't be intimidated by better.

I think that's why I love to watch Charlie's videos. He truly raises the bar. Is it realistic to expect to emulate his videos? Perhaps not, he has some top notch equipment, natural talent and finely honed skills. Plus, we're all unique and that's good.

However, I do think he provides great examples of what to do, and gives us incentive to improve our production efforts. I respect his opinion and his work, therefore, he is the featured YouTube Rainer today in YouTube Thursdays.

Hi Steve, I think music is a good addition to video. Just as long as it enchances it and doesn't detract from it...I also think Natural Sound - windchimes, birds, a stream are mighty powerful. We're trying to enchance the experience with sound, therefore, it's important to be thoughtful with our choices.

You're right about Charlie, I've been watching many of his videos. One thing I think he does best, is he "sells the sizzle" meaning not only showcasing the bricks and mortar, he's selling the lifestyle.

You pay him a high compliment which I agree is well deserved. Having found his blog and home page long before I knew he was an AR Rainmaker, I was discouraged from video thinking that I couldn't put "professional" videography in my budget. His work is that impressive to me. I did pass on his contact and site information to others wanting to see what I feel are the best for that area. Good call.

The media we use to market is varied and how we use it depends on our local area listings, the price tag that might warrant spending more for a bigger splash, drama if a luxury property. Or keeping it simple for a small rural farm property with a low price tag. Video is like a musical instrument. The elements you add, the personality of the place with a little of your own in the back ground and creativity plus time invested to improve your skill, all affect the real estate buyer (seller) experience. Real, honest, down to earth and friendly is more important than just a polished, professional look. The flavor of a video is the setting, the approach from beginning to the end, the sound, lighting, pace, transitions.. a zillion little things like the musician that is playing solo, unplugged or with seven of his buddies and a sound, light, stage engineer crew. I'm off to check Charlie out. Thanks for bringing him in to the spotlight with accolades as a mentor to learn from.

Hi Andy, Yep your advice is always on target. ( I also agree, being super great is not always the goal...videos filled with our own personality and expertise is very important) I do think it's important to have some basic, and decent skills in order to entertain viewers...Charlie can help show us what to strive for...will we reach his level, maybe not. But he will "up our game." :)
