"Good things come with hard work." Coach Seymour
Forget the $200,000.00 wedding, Elope! Elvis is waiting for you and so is your first home.
Now matter how you cut it, nothing is free in life and those who understand the value of hard work will always do well...Generation Y is learning that getting married is an expensive proposition. Yes, that generation that tends to take everything for granted, you know what I mean: Instant computer access, information overload, cell phones, I-pods, and shot gun weddings? It's almost impossible in California to get married for under $20,000.00 and for a modest affair it may easily run over $50,000.00.
I recently went to an extravagant wedding in Los Angeles that cost nearly $200,000.00 and frankly I was shocked because I knew how broke the groom was....both sets of parents had pitched in and really made a great show keeping up appearances for friends and family. But would not that $200,000.00 have been better invested in a home for the couple who ended up renting an apartment because they had no money left to purchase a home?
It seems that some families put too much emphasis on the ceremony and reception that only lasts 3-6 hours. Now don't get me wrong, I love to go to weddings and I understand how important they are for the parents as well as the couple. I don't mean to sound sarcastic about the 50% divorce rates and how current Pop Culture's anything goes mentality sees people changing spouses almost as fast as they do under garments... But don't we suppose to start financial planning before we get married? Is not that part of the process and purpose of getting married in the first place?
How about a $100,000.00 wedding and a $100,000.00 down payment for a home? In California that's only enough for 20% down but at least you can avoid private mortgage insurance!!!
Possible extreme Solution: Get married on-line on Active Rain, invite the 57000 members, maybe you can find a realtor here to get you into a home all at the same time!......Well, maybe nooooooot. Ok, that was a dumb idea.
