Redundant Fiber Optic/Broadband Internet and Merchant Connection? Yes, PLEASE!!

There is much need for a strong broadband presence here in beautiful Crescent City, CA.  Being so far away from San Francisco and Sacramento is truly rewarding for me, but its hardship might be felt in its lack of commercial/industrial presence, hence very little Information Technology (IT) is available in comparison.  However, people and businesses of the information age have come to require the use of the latest technology.  Redwood Coast Connect (RCC) is an entity from Cal State University Humboldt that might bring this technology to the local community's fingertips.

Living here for over 18 months, there have been two or three occurrences of market shutdown due to cuts in the line along the highway during road construction. If there were two lines available, businesses and supermarkets would still be able to conduct transactions since they would still be "connected."  The concern of redundancy was voiced by the audience repeatedly tonight during a presentation by RCC.

Apparently, this will require the considerable investment of some regional private corporations such as our cable and cell phone providers.  So here's RCC's pitch.  Crescent City, CA (along with the four counties RCC represents) needs to clearly and informatively express their interest, needs, and ability to pay for IT services from our regional communication providers.

RCC distributed surveys for all four counties to fill out.  Being affiliated with Humboldt State University, (http://redwoodcoastconnect.humboldt.edu) RCC has plenty of statistical analysis validity.  I think RCC will connect the lost coast very soon.  When they do, more people will want to stay and buy a home here in Majestic Redwoods of Del Norte County, CA.

Do you have the ability to utilize a PCMCIA Broadband Wireless Cellular Card?  This may be an option for you if you can not obtain true broadband.

Sam,  It's interesting you should ask that because yes I do.  Anywhere that I can receive a cell phone signal is anywhere that I can connect to the internet.  Although I have experienced problems with joining the network before I can even get on.  It sounds like progress could begin within the next two or three quarters for our region with fast, quality downloads and realtime videoconferencing.  Telemedicine seems to be a very strong argument for the technology in itself, let alone all the fun everyone else will be having.

 Thanx for commenting, Sam

Wes - I am using Verizon who is not known as the fastest wireless broadband and overall the service is better than I expected.  Good luck to you!

I also have a Verizon Air Card, PC5750.  I enjoy being able to access the net from anywhere rather than where there are cords and wires.  I use it specifically for Open Houses and when I go out of town so that I do not lose my connection with RE.  The card has had trouble locating a network, however, on a couple of occassions.  I am still searching for a technology that will be near flawless in consistent reliability.
