The Possum Drop is scheduled for December 31 in Tallapoosa, GA.
New York drops the Apple in Times Square, Atlanta, GA drops the Peach at Underground, and Tallapoosa drops the poosum on Head Ave. On New Year's Eve in Tallapoosa, GA, Spencer the possum is dropped from the tallest building on Head Ave. to ring in the New Year.
Fear not, Spencer is not a live possum, (PETA would have a fit). He was a road kill that was preserved by Bud Jones, a local taxidermist and historian.
When Tallapoosa was a mere settlement town, the local Indians (native Americans) referred to the area as Possum Snout. This was either because of a local Indian leader call Possum Snout, or because the original map of the area looked like a possum snout. The story changes depending on who tells it.
