The City of Gaithersburg presents The Harmonious Art Group’s 17th Anniversary Exhibition of Chinese Calligraphy and Brush Painting. The exhibit runs from January 6 to March 4, 2012 at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, 506 South Frederick Avenue, Gaithersburg, Maryland. Viewing hours are Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The public is invited to an Artists’ Reception on Saturday, January 14 from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Fifteen group members and five invited artists from the metropolitan area will display their works in traditional and contemporary Chinese styles. The art group was founded in 1995 by Bertrand Mao, master of Chinese Shan-Shui (Mountain-Water), and John Wang, master of Chinese calligraphy, to share the beauty of this ancient art form with the community. Over the years the group members have incorporated new techniques and styles to present a diversity of Chinese art. This year they proudly present two of their members whose work has been featured in both national and international workshops and shows. Elise Lin is an advocate of the fusion of Chinese and Western art. Her work features distinct colors, lighting and the realistic rendering of objects. Wendy Yee paints more traditionally, yet includes hints of modern techniques. Both of the artists are highly engaged in community services, and they both volunteer their time to teach Chinese Art at Lincoln Park in Rockville, MD.
