Are You A Good Role Model For Our Future? Children...Young Adults and Technology!

I often wonder if parents, grandparents and teachers encourage our kids to become more technically savv y. When my step son visits he can really maneuver the computer.

Can't say we can give the schools the credit, often times we hear, "We don't have the budget or we had budget cuts!"

What does that tell you?  It's frightening. Should our kids have to go to private schools to receive the education they deserve?  To me there is something really wrong with this picture.

Where did Danny's skills come from?....not from his school but from his daddy

Often times I wonder about my own sons.  Was I a good parent in getting them prepared for the future? After-all, where schools and education lack a parent must step in. Step in and get these kids up to par....

Why are we as a country weak in really understanding the depths of technology compared to many when we are considered one of the richest countries in the world? Are our priorities set?

Is money a factor?   Why aren't we doing everything we can to ensure our children have a fighting chance at being successful when they become adults?

Why do we as adults fight technology ourselves? We've seen the trends.....Read more......

Midori,

I like this one, because it does remind me of what our children need. The kids these days are lackintg certain skills needed, and we need to show them!!!

I think it is up to us.  If our children go to public school, make sure the schools are equipped with the latest technology or help them get it.  Great opportunity for a fundraising project for a Realtor to undertake to help the community.

As far as my children go, I keep our computers current, use 3 laptops around the house now, put my kids on the computer at about 2 1/2 years old which is about the age where they can start using a mouse and understand the connection between the mouse and the computer screen.  At this age they also learn how to enter their name into the kids games and begin playing.

It's CRUCIAL that our children keep up with technology and that we let them learn their way around the internet (under our supervision) as it's the way of the future!

And yes, we as parents need to embrace technology as children learn what they live.

Hi Midori, Congratulations on your new blog.  I posted a comment...I hope...I'm not sure it went through.  Anyway, this was an insightful post and makes you think about the wide range of responsibility which educating our children spans today.

The kids also need to learn WITHOUT the computer, many kids don't even know how to add 1+ 2 without a calculator, many don't have a clue as to how to spell because of spell check.  I'm not saying computers are out totally but lets teach the kids the basics too!

Tom-and if the school does not provide it...the parents should.

David and Lisa-I agree it should and does fall back on the parents.  When my kids were in school I volunteered....I was involved but I still wonder...did I give them a fair shake?  While my boys are doing just fine...I often wonder!

The best way to teach kids always is to lead by example. Thank you so much for you input...

excellent post - I have never understood why people sometimes vote against taxes for public education! It has always really upset me~! We have money for everything else EXCEPT the future of our nation! Those young people are our future and if we don't invest in a proper education we are damning our own nation!

I have thought the same thing, how about teaching our kids to balance a check book. I think Speech and Business law should be required in every school.

My grandson knows more about technology than I do. I think he needs to be more rounded in other areas.

Hi Midori!

A lovely well written and provacative piece.  Schools alone cannot teach our children everything. The more we put in, the better they will do!  Nice job

Unfortunately schools can't teach it all plus they have limited budgets. Involved parents are the key to it all - give them the values, show them by example, and be available when they need you and they will be just fine. Good post!
