Buyer and Realtor Safety in the Snow

Buyer and Realtor Safety in the SnowWith all the recent snow, it is a great time to look over how to make safety a priority for Realtors and buyers alike. When planning to take your buyer out, consider the weather and area carefully. Realtors should ask: What route will I take? Am I heading into an area that is tricky to navigate? Will there be parking nearby? Am I heading into the mountains? Do I want to travel after it gets dark? This shows a buyer that Realtors are concerned for their safety.

Realtors need to make sure insurance, tags, and maintenance is up to date. Tires need to be in good shape too.  If you answered yes to the mountain question, will you need chains or a shovel? Invest in good windshield wipers, a window scraper, and an emergency safety kit.  You can buy the most basic safety kit, but I recommend putting your own together. Part of being a Realtor is knowing what you or your buyer may need. It can even be more cost effective. Here is what I have in my winter kit:

  • WaterBuyer and Realtor Safety in the Snow
  • Food
  • Jumper Cables and maintenance kit
  • Snow Shovel
  • Extra warm clothes, including gloves and hats.
  • Flashlight
  • Ice Melt
  • Emergency Blanket
  • Hand-warmers
  • First Aid Kit

Many Realtors may already have something similar, which is excellent! Check your kit every few months to replace any items needed. Safety preparedness encompasses both the inside and outside of your car. Are all your lights working? Did you wipe off all of the snow? Did you warm up your car before heading out? Did you kick off the ice in your wheel well? Safety often starts with prevention. Buyers also notice these things too!

Buyer and Realtor Safety in the SnowMost buyers will dress appropriately for the weather, but in the case a buyer can not or the weather came in unexpectedly, go the extra snowy mile for them. Hand your buyer a hat and gloves! (Maybe a warm coffee or tea too?) Will there be ice or thick snow? Great sellers will shovel for potential buyers and their Realtors, but if they can not, take the path first or create a way for them. When you are inside, make sure to wipe off shoes or take them off completely; you don’t want a buyer falling in a home.

These simple suggestions can keep both buyers and Realtors safe in snowy weather. However, the number one way to avoid all potential safety hazards for both Realtors and buyers is: reschedule!!

We're lucky to have only infrequent snow in western Washington, but this is a great list of " must haves" to stay safe when there is snow. And it does remind me of really bonding with some buyers a few years back when we went out house hunting despite quitea bit of that infrequent snow...took turns pushing each other's car as we repeatedly got stuck and laughed about how crazy we were to be out looking at houses!

Living in New York we do get our fair share of the nasty white stuff. Yes we need to be prepared for the worst. Not too many people do so though. Great post ... good information for your area. My daughter just moved to Colorado.. I should make sure she sees this..  Happy New Year...

Nancy- The first winter I lived in Olympia it snowed a good few feet in town! Everyone said it was an anomaly, but we decided to make the best of it. A group of us rented cross country skis and went around the downtown area and I believe we helped out quite a few people driving in the snow! It can be crazy to be unprepared, but if there are good people with you it makes a huge difference!

Janis- New York looks crazy in the winter sometimes! You will have to mention to your daughter that we are pretty lucky: We get a storm here in Colorado and it dumps a few feet of snow, but then the days that follow are in the upper 50's to 60's and it melts off again! Makes a huge difference in rescheduling!

Hi Rick. Great post (Suggested so hope you get featured).  I think I will do something similar for our area - in the Houston area, we aren't too concerned with snow shovels and mountains :)  So my post will have to focus on some different things. But the basics are the same for all of us in all areas.    Something in addition, I recently learned (the hard way) is to keep a list of wrecker and towing company phone numbers in your glove compartment.  Some of the roadside assistance programs, provide for the reimbursement of towing services and may look up towing companies for you, but are not directly affiliated with them.  It's a real time saver to have your own list readily available!

Joyce Godwin (#6) You are so right I will put a list of towing companies in my car.  I have also recently become a member of AAA for that reason precisely.
