One of the tenants I live by is, “I am responsible for me, for my actions, what I say, and who I am.” If I accept this responsibility, I have found a greater sense of power and freedom. This tenant plays itself out in the voice I have chosen in my blog life.
I want a voice which is positive and is mainly directed towards potential clients. I blog on Active Rain and have learned a great deal from my fellow bloggers. I value the relationships on this platform, but the majority of posts are directed at potential buyers and sellers of real estate in the Lancaster PA area.
Positive rules of relationships are important to me in my blog posts. I value direct and private conversation when a disagreement arises or clarification is needed. Rarely, if ever, do I write a reactive post to those with which I disagree. If I do, it will be positive and not meant to be strident. One post I wrote like this was, “Procuring Cause Needs to Go the Way of the Horse and Buggy.” This post was in response to one written by Alan May. It was not a reaction to his post, but a way for me to express my view regarding procuring cause. I definitely have an opinion and am not afraid to use my voice to express my thoughts.
When debate was raging among bloggers on Active Rain whether real estate agents are professional or not, I chose not to engage in a reaction to other comments or posts. I wrote a post entitled, “I am a Real Estate Professional in Lancaster PA” This was a way for me to give voice to my thoughts in a positive manner. I do not like to disagree with others in public if I have not engaged them directly through a phone call or email. This is one of the ways that I honor what I consider to be positive rules of relationships.
One thing I have realized is this voice and style is less likely to capture the attention of others. I tend to avoid controversy and sarcasm. Recently there was featured post on the lack of appearance etiquette of another agent. Nothing wrong with it, but it was not my style. It was not my tone. In so many ways it expressed values which I do not embrace. Again, I am not saying this disparagingly. I do not want to call out the appearance of another in a public forum. This is something which is not that important to me. My appearance is important to me, but your appearance is much less so.
I take responsibility for my voice. I have chosen it. It serves me well. I look forward to further dialogue with my Active Rain friends or my personal friends.
