Ga. Property Tax Revision

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker
Yesterday at our Board luncheon Glen Richardson the Speaker of the House of Georgia was our guest. He shared with us the new bill up for vote soon to repeal all Georgia ad-valorum tax including property tax and replace it with a 4% sales tax on all goods and services. Some people are all for it and some do not care to change the current system. This would change our Real Estate market dramatically as those with escrow payments would be paying far less every month on their home note. In his speech he talked about how local cities and school boards are out pacing inflation by 50% in increases each year and this was the main reason for the bill. It will be very interesting to watch in the coming weeks.

Wow dry subject I guess. Maybe I should change the title to some pop culture icon. Naaw that would be too cheap.

I like the idea.  Here in Florida we had one legislator propose eliminating the property tax and replacing it with increased sale tax. His idea failed, but I like it.

Hi Dan, well at least he tried. This might go through here although a few are still sitting on the fence.

Hi Keith & Robin,
I think sales tax is a better tax and wish NC consider doing that.  It'll be interesting to see how this goes.

Interesting proposition. I like the idea of a sales tax in place of property taxes. We have so many special levies tacked onto ours it isn't funny. Keep us posted...

We have a big tug of war regarding taxes in WA State.  Over 8% sales taxes plus property taxes.  Make sure your legislators make wise decisions.

I've been doing research on the proposed bill, HR900.  Frankly, I'm a little worried.  I have yet to read the bill as it will be presented for vote and that day is rapidly drawing closer.  The state has not been prompt in returning to my town their portion of the existing sales tax.  I'm also not clear on how the legislature will disperse the funds back to the municipalities.  If the citizens do not like paying higher taxes they have a pretty direct line on who to approach with their concerns.  Atlanta is a long way from here.

I didn't know about it but it is something to definitely watch.  I know the old system definitely can stand to improve and be ditched altogether.

What I really would like to see is the definitive list of what services will now be taxed once the bill is passed.  How will municipalities be able to get bonds for projects if thatey can't show a stable "income" from property taxes?

Patricia, he claimed that all taxing authorities will get what they are collecting now plus inflation. This does not answer our question about bonds and this is one of many of my concerns as well. I am trying to find the link to his site.

I googled HR 900 and was able to download aversion of the bill.  The day I downloaded the information I attended a meeting in my community where a person from the GMA answered questions about the bill.  I raised the question about the fair tax ans was told that it was no longer being considered part of the bill.  Has anyone heard the same thing?

Yes the HR900 is dead. The new one in draft only deals with ad-valorum taxes. ie; auto & property taxes.
