This Time, Sometime, Maybe, Never...2012 Resolutions?

By
Real Estate Agent with Better Homes & Gardens | The Masiello Group

Ah, New Year's Day and the time to pull out those famous (or infamous) resolutions.  I've known people who seem to do very well with resolutions.  For some they provide that extra nudge of motivation to keep growing and achieving.  Awesome!

resolutionsHowever, for the rest of us, there are times when making that list of resolutions for the new year can feel like planning ahead for what we will need to feel guilty about at the end of the year.  We start out feeling committed and maybe even excited about all that will be accomplished, but after a few months, the energy fades and we find ourselves back on the old path.

Why is that?  Could it be that perhaps we are not as gung ho about it in the first place?  Are we making that list, not because we really want to, but because we believe we are SUPPOSED to do it?  Are we listing the items that we truly want to change, or the ones we think others want us to change?

If you see a bit of yourself in the above description and would like to avoid the "this time, sometime, maybe never" trap, then I might have an idea for you.

Opportunities and ideas come up all the time.  Have you ever noticed that when you share a great idea or opportunity with someone, the first thing they seem to do is start to present you with your future excuses for not going for it?  I'm not sure what it is in human nature that creates this phenomenon.  After a while, we don't even need others to give us all of the "what ifs" and reasons why something may not work, we start doing that on our own.

So, instead of a long list of resolutions, I am making one promise to myself this year.  This year when an opportunity or great idea comes along, I promise to ignore the naysayers (myself included) and ask myself one simple question:

"What if everything goes perfectly and this works?"

If the answer to that questions is something that I want, then I promise myself that I will go for it with gusto!  That's it.  No resolutions, just one promise.  The promise to give myself the freedom to succeed.

Whether resolutions or promises, I wish a happy and fulfilling 2012 to all!

Positive thinking is so necessary to keep us on track. Goals are good, a plan is good... motivation to keep moving forward is so important. Yes... stay away from those that always find fault with trying new things.

Kristen, I love how you worded this, "freedom to succeed". I never make resolutions, personally. However, I do write a business plan and set up annual goals. Now I will give myself this same freedom. Thanks for the encouragment. Happy New Year!

We don't do resolutions any more. It just got too much of a bummer disappointing ourselves all the time! We have plenty of people who do that for us, why add to it?

By the way, did you know there's an app for that? Making resolutions, I mean. Really.

Resolutions 2012

And there are 5 others, too, 1 free and 4 for 99 cents. Ah, technology. Don'tcha love it? ;-D

Happy New Year!

I participate in a spinning class every week. .

I have for at least 18 months months now

Last year for Jan 2011 our instructor warned us. .come early to get a bike, the RESOLUTIONERS ARE COMING!

Sure enough, for January and February, I had to go to class 30 minutes early to sign up for a bike. .

after that, I could arrive to class 1 minute early and I could easily find a bike.

This year, the resolutioners are in full force again. .

so here it goes. .

my resolution for 2012 to be at least 30 minutes early to my spinning class . .(for the first 8 weeks of 2012)

Happy New Year!

True Luis.  I've always been a planner, but my problem can be that I spend so much time on the plan I may not get to the doing.

Goof point Frank and Karen.  Goals are a personal thing as well.  I've known some people who do well to set really high goals.  It challenges them and they are happy even getting close.  I know others who do better setting more modest goals, since they thrive when they exceed them.

I'm glad you like it Joan.  Here's to an awesome 2012!

That's right Janis.  It can be easy to get sucked into the negativity of others.  Sometimes it can feel like an obstacle course avoiding them.  :-)

Your welcome Valerie.  I agree about business plans as well.  It is good to know where we plan to go and how we will get there.

That's exactly how I am Pat & Wayne...and that is hysterical about the app.  Sometimes I think they are great and sometimes I wonder if people will know what to do without an app. :-)

Too funny Fernando!  ...and the spinning class sounds awesome!

Great point Kristen and Thank You for the reminder!! I don't like New Years Resolutions just as I don't like the word "Diet" while it may work for some, they don't work for me. I've always been a planner as well and like you, I've spent way too much time planning and sometimes Never put those plans in action.

Have a great 2012!

I like that Norma!  I think I'll print that in nice bold letters at the top of my business plan too.

Yes, "diet" is one of the nastiest 4 letter words Beth!  Funny, how I didn't lose weight until I stopped trying to "diet."  A great 2012 to you too!

Great post, Kristen.  I did not actually make any New Year's Resolutions.  I have been slowly changing my habits since around September of 2011.  I made a biz plan for 2012.  I am believing these days that resolutions make me feel like a failure if I don't achieve them, so instead I'm opting for change of mind.  Hoping this works too!

Congrats on the feature!

"Ain't it da trut" (isn't that the truth?) as we would say in Hawaii.  You should have as a blog in the middle of the year "What if everything goes perfectly and this works?" and see how far people have traveled this road of Real Estate Adventure.

This year my resolution had to do with giving, not me.  And I'm sure I'll keep it.  That was my way of avoiding failure.
