Caveat Omnia

Integrity is a misunderstood word.  Integrity is an under-appreciated state of being.

Integrity is not honesty.  It is more than that.

What does integrity mean?

Hint:  it shares the same Latin root as the word "integer."  An integer is a whole number.

According to Oxford, integrity means:  1  the state of being whole or unified  2  soundness of construction.

Lately I have read so many blog posts where the concept of INTEGRITY was featured on the marquee.  This Realtor did a sneaky this; a bank did a sneaky that.  And the final result was disaster.

We use Latin phrases routinely in our vernacular.

Caveat emptor - buyer beware
Caveat venditor - seller beware
Caveat actor - doer beware

We hear and see the word caveat so much!

Would you permit me to create a new Latin phrase for our vernacular?

Caveat Omnia

That means -- BEWARE OF EVERYTHING

Do I mean Henny Penny paranoia where we expect that everything is coming down on our heads?  NO.

But life is such that we have to watch out for everything coming our way!  We need the attitude of "Trust, but verify."  We have to check it out, and check it out carefully - no matter what "it" is!

Think about it.

  • Free shipping.
  • _____________ (name your gubment program) will cost $1 trillion.
  • Newer appliances.  Finished basement.  Completely new roof.  Maintained annually.  Chimney recently swept and inspected.  Water view.
  • NAR reports xxx number of houses sold last quarter.
  • Our company employees are thoroughly vetted and legal.
  • 23,000 miles on the odometer.
  • No hidden fees.
  • Made in the USA.
  • 2-3 day priority delivery.
  • Our journalists write their own material.
  • PG-13 -- some nudity, minor drug use, mild language, some violent scenes.
  • Unemployment went down to 8.9% and there is no inflation.

Could I go on?  YES!!

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE FAKE OUT.  IT'S ALL ABOUT THE FAKE OUT.  IT'S ALL ABOUT THE FAKE OUT.

So, what do we do when it seems like everything is falling apart?

WE BE TRUE TO OURSELVES!

How is a lack of integrity defined in our minds?  By the fact that integrity exists in our minds!

If we see a circumstance that appears to lack integrity, remember, it is defined by other circumstances that HAVE integrity!

If there is a scale of bad to good, with

-10 <-----bad----> 0 <----good----> +10

and we see something we would rank as a -8, it can only be defined as such because there is something else that can be ranked as +8!

Left is defined by right.  Up is defined by down.  Over is defined by under.

A lack of integrity is defined by integrity.

The moral of the story is this:

The turkeys are everywhere - don't let the turkeys get you down!

LET'S BE TRUE TO OURSELVES AND LET THE CHIPS FALL AS THEY MAY!

AND DON'T FORGET - TRUST, BUT VERIFY!  BUT THERE ARE A LOT OF REALLY, REALLY GOOD PEOPLE OUT THERE!  BE ONE OF THEM!

I always enjoy reading your posts, Jay.  I agree that you have to be wary everywhere, but the thing that struck me the most about your post is the positive note that it ended on -- that somewhere in the world things are going right.

There are a good many things that we take for granted until we see them fail.  My husband is from Guatemala and every time we visit his family, I come back with a renewed appreciationi of what we enjoy here in the United States.

For just one example, look at our mail service.  It is AMAZING how well it works!

In  Guatemala City (the capitol and largest city), one of my in-laws stopped receiving mail after someone stole the mailman's bicycle.  They didn't get mail service again until the neighborhood itself bought him a new bicycle (over a year later.)  And no one in their right mind there would ever put a check in the mail.  It would stolen in a heartbeat.   Each bill has to be paid in person, every month. That's days of standing in line every month!

We tend to notice the failures, but we have so much to appreciate.  Libraries, fire departments, public parks, dependable ambulances.  Our telephone system works, we can turn on the tap and get water at any hour of the day, and our bridges rarely collapse.

While it makes sense to be careful and wary about promised benefits, do stop for a minute and appreciate all of the things we can depend on.  Things work so well that they rarely come to our attention.

I like that: trust but verify! That just makes good sense! Hope your 2012 turns out GREAT!

Peg - I am one to trust and not do the verifying too!  But things seem to be sinking fast and I think we need to be wary nonetheless.

Michael - I thought that was a brilliant line.  And Reagan did just that.

DeeDee - that was from Reagan when he "did business," his words, with Gorbachev.  He said we would trust the Russians to live up to their agreements (which they were not very good about doing previously) but would also make sure!

Katie - I served for two years as a missionary in the hills of Ecuador.  There I worked primarily among the "Indians," and lived in a mud hut and learned their language.  I also developed a DEEP appreciation for what we have made for ourselves in the U.S.  Remember, we did this for ourselves.  We are no different than other people(s), we just have a wonderful system which allows us to become what we wish.

People in Ecuador were not very honest either.  Every year I see our children taking for "normal" what I had grown up thinking was deviant.  It seems that people want less and less of the good and more and more of that which brings no value.  Pop culture is more important than culture, if you understand my meaning.

But I am positive because I affiliate with people who really are good, and try to improve as well.  For me this affiliation balances what I see as this sinking of our society.

Thanks Barbara-Jo - not my line - Mr. Reagan's!

Unfortunatly I have noticed myself leaning a bit more to the cautious side, but it's become necessary.  Take nothing at face value anymore :(

I hear you Justin.  It's unfortunate, but still, we can verify and keep our eyes open.

Jay, I wasn't sure where you were going with this, but you are right.  Reminds me of the old adage regarding marriage... keep both eyes open before, and half-closed after...

How about the most recent example on a massive scale?  The NAR publishing the statement that their housing sales number for the past 5 years were low by about 20%.

Not only did they lose their own institutional integrity, they tainted the integrity of every NAR member.

Thanks Chris.  I never heard the half closed part, but it wouldn't hurt with the ears either...

James - I wasn't trying to do something like your word posts, which I love.  This was more of a rant, with a happy ending!

Lenn - the NAR was the fourth bullet on my list of fake outs.  Some of their numbers were off by 50% I understand, and you are right, everything and everyone gets tainted.  Things hit the fan like they did for Madoff.  The ruse can't last forever.

That pretty much says it all Yolanda.  You have to wonder how many times Julius Ceasar said to beware of everything and don't let all the jerks get you down.  He probably didn't use the word "bastards," because, well, you know.
