The church above was built in 1847 by Episcopalians and named Saint James. At some point in time they used it as the Prince William Academy. It was next acquired by the Church of the Brethren.
During the Civil War it was used by both Confederate and Union troops as a barracks and hospital. By the end of the war the interior of the church was in ruins, but the solid stone exterior was intact.
In 1866 a Baptist church was organized in Brentsville. There are no records to indicate where services were held. However, in 1897 then pastor Dr. William E. Hatcher, the congregation's namesake, was able to raise the necessary funds to purchase the church for $330.00. To learn more of their ministry visit Hatcher’s Memorial Baptist Church. It is within eyesight of the historic Brentsville Union Church which was built in 1874.
