What kind of energy are we giving off?

I've just got to blog about one of my pet peeves. Several times a week I call real estate professionals and they answer their cell phone in a manner that I would consider to be "unprofessional". I get "hello" in a downbeat voice that sounds like their dog just died, or "yo" or something along those lines. As soon as I introduce myself, they switch on the fake "Hey, how's it going??" happy voice.

Here's the deal. If you're going to give out your cell phone number and use it for business, you need to be "on" for every phone call. I can't even imagine what a potential client would be thinking if I answered my phone in that manner. Sometimes we just have to have the "on stage persona", but it needs to start at the first hello. Give them the energy that you're happy to hear from them (even if it's bad news). It's just common courtesy and having gracious hospitality skills reinforce your professionalism.

Kerry - I couldn't agree with you more!!  I am constantly amazed at how some agents answer their own phone.  They give out that number to use, and yet they answer the phone as though the call is an interruption or something else that has them answering the phone in less than a professional demeanor.

Interesting comments from someone who prefers to remain anonymous. If you want me to take you seriously, have the courage to come out of the shadows.

I think we sometimes forget that people form their first impression of us when we answer the telephone.

Like you Judith, I try to keep it simple with a "Hello, this is Kerry". If I want to be in this business, than I should look forward to talking to people. In those four words I can convey interest, warmth, hostility, indifference, boredom, you name it. It's important that people understand that I want to have a conversation with them, not that I'm irritated that they interrupted me (which is the energy we sometimes give off, I'm sure I've been guilty of that in the past).
