West Chelsea-a buzzing Manhattan New York Neighborhood

By
Real Estate Agent with Douglas Elliman Real Estate

The West Chelsea neighborhood has become one of Manhattan's emerging neighborhoods for new development condominiums.  The evolution of the Far West side of Chelsea has been greatly influenced by the development of the High Line Park which runs from approximately Gansevoort Street in the Meat Packing District up to 30th Street.  The High Line Park has been a tremendous success, originally an elevated railway abandoned for many years and converted into an elevated park that has become a major attraction and neighborhood amenity.  With the development of the High Line Park has come some of the most forward thinking new development condominium buildings in all of Manhattan.

The High Line Park is the new anchor attraction now of the Far
West Chelsea neighborhood.  The Far West Side of Chelsea is also well known as the current center of the New York city art world.  A transition in the 1990's saw West Chelsea became the new home to many new art gallery's and studio's moving from the higher priced Soho neighborhood to the developing West Chelsea area. Along 10th and 11th Avenues in West Chelsea there are hundreds of art galleries now.

Making
West Chelsea dynamic is that much of it is in a historic district.  So much of the Real Estate is found in tree lined streets along pre-war townhouses and apartment buildings.  But right next to these buildings has become a neighborhood with a huge selection of restaurants, cafes and shopping.  The emergence of the High Line brought with it new construction condominiums designed by world renowned architects.  This combination of a dynamic neighborhood environment with practically every type of real estate available has made the far West Chelsea neighborhood one of Manhattan's most desirable.

A neighborhood still evolving as the High Line Park reaches it's third phase and the appearance of more neighborhood friendly amenities,
West Chelsea is establishing itself as one of the most in demand Manhattan neighborhoods.

Eileen, it is amazing how a City as old as NYC continues to re-invent itself. Growing up this was not a place you really wanted to live...now...awesome! Thanks for the great local post!

Thanks for sharing the West Chelsea information.  Many of us work in the suburbs and have little understanding of what real estate is like in New York City.

Happy New Year!

Hi Eileen,

Those are some cool looking buildings.  I love visiting NY and I personally wouldn't mind living there but Scott would not okay that relocation. :)
