Mr Telephone Man...

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with ADT Real Estate

there's something wrong with my FSBO's number.

It doesn't help to hide your head in the sand...I have a client who's very interested in working with a FSBO in Wilkes-Barre, but he doesn't want to do anything without my help. In this day and age, when loyalties run very low, it's refreshing to have someone like this speak words of encouragement into my life. I really want to help this client, because of the great amount of confidence and loyalty he's shown in me, so I have been trying to get in touch with the FSBO from the phone number I got off of the tattered sign attached to their fence. I think there's another one in the yard, but the grass is too high to see it. These folks need a Realtor!! Nope, I don't want to cut the grass. I just want to help them to sell the house they so obviously don't care about and put it in the hands of someone who does and will take care of it.

Regrettably, every time I call, I get the same response. Mrs. FSBO, here's my musical response...

Mr. Telephone ManMr. Telephone man
There's something wrong with my line,
When I dial my FSBO's number
I get a click everytime
Mr. Telephone Man
There's something wrong with my line
When I dial my FSBO's number
I get a click every time

When I dial 611 to be at service
She said "Hello may I help you
please?"
I told her something must be wrong
With my phone
Cause my FSBO wouldn't hang up
on me

Mr. Telephone Man
There something wrong with my line
When I dial my FSBO's number I get a
Click every time

Mr. Telephone Man
There something wrong with my line
When I dial my FSBO's number I get a
Click every time

My FSBOlet the phone ring 20 times
Before she answered
Let me tell you what happened then (ah)
A minute later I got the operator
Saying please hang up and place
Your call again

Mr. Telephone Man
There's something wrong with
My line
When I dial my FSBO's number
I get a click everytime
Mr. Telephone Man,
Something's wrong with my line
I try to dial her number
I get a click everytime

My FSBO's son is on the
telephone (the telephone)
He keeps telling me my FSBO
Aint home (that she's not home)
She ain't got no party line (Oo Oo)
This situation's blowing my mind (Oo Oo)
Oh, I just can't take it anymore

Please operator
See what you can do,
I dialed the right number
But I still couldn't get through
Could you just check the line
Just one more time if you can
I'm pretty sure her phone
Wouldn't be answered by her son
If she knew I wanted to sell her home

Mr. Telephone Man
There's something wrong with
My line
When I dial my FSBO's number
I get a click everytime
Mr. Telephone Man,
Something's wrong with my line
I try to dial her number
I get a click everytime

Must be a bad connection
I gave her my card and direction
I just can't take this no more
This situation's blowing my mind
blowing my mind
Can't get my FSBO on the line

I tried dialing information (Mr. Telephone Man)
I can't get no cooperation (Mr. Telephone Man)
Cause he's still on the phone telling me my FSBO
Aint at home
Come on baby I just can't take it any more

Help me out
please Mr. Telephone Man
Help me out
please Mr. Telephone Man

Well at least no one else is going to buy it out from under you. Sounds like time to knock on the door

Tried that too Charlie. You'd think I was the tax man or have the plague. I don't know what's been done in the past to cause such a disdain for Realtors, but it must have been bad. Thanks for reading and commenting.

I recently had the same situation - and I went to the home a couple of times (with my Buyers) but she never called back or answered the door.  Then she listed it with another Agent for way over what the home appears to be worth.  Cute song:)

Ed,

I can feel your pain!! I can't even get them to tell me how much they want for this one. I'll keep trying until my buyer wants to move on. We'll see.

Andrew -  Love the song and the adapted lyrics!! Isn't it funny how the consumers have such a funny feeling toward REALTORS (R), we are here to help! Somehow we need to change that perception. Great post to do so! PS. Is this your entry in the Inspired by Song contest?

Candace,

Thanks for the comment and the compliment. It's crazy how some people view Realtors. I guess it's like anything else in that it only takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch.

No, this isn't my entry. My entry was http://activerain.com/blogsview/260611/Who-am-I. I posted it early and it's pretty much buried now. Go take a look at it and let me know what you think.

Andrew - This is clever.  I remember this song, and I actually liked it!  Why did I just admit that?  I have no inner monologue.

Jason,

OK...Men at Work and now this one? Ouch!! Where'd all those cool points go? LOL

The truly sad part is that I actually thought it up, so I must have had it bouncing around somewhere in my head too.

This is where they usually say to give them some value.  Let them know that you are not trying to list the house.  You are just trying to give them some helpful information in hopes that if THEY decide to list, you'll be someone they can trust.  You probably know that old song.  That's all the advice this mortgage guy can muster.

Either that or you can pretend like you have a telegram for them.  It worked for the shark on SNL.

Suzanne,

I couldn't help it. I just had this song in my head after I couldn't get them to respond to me. It had to get out. LOL

Kevin,

Hey, long time my friend. I don't want to list their property...I want to sell it. That's what makes this situation even funnier to me. I actually have someone who is very interested in their house, even in it's current condition. We'll see if they come around before my guy gets tired of trying. Thanks for dropping by again.

Great lyrics!  An associate called on a FSBO this week.  The number on the sign out front was so small one had to get out of the car to read it.   The phone conversation was interesting (she has someone for the house) and he thought it was strange that she wasn't trying to list it.  She laughed and told him to call the owner of another nearby FSBO that she sold last week.  He did check up on her.  We went to see the home this week - it's a good deal.

Judi,

I know that it works that way very often. I've sold a couple of FSBO's because I had the buyer ready to go. I guess they just don't trust that it's the truth for some reason. Who knows.

Thanks for the success story though. There's always hope.

Adam,

You can comment away on this one. It's not an entry at all. I was just feeling goofy yesterday afternoon and thought I'd put this one out there.

Most FSBO sellers eventually realize there is a lot more to selling and buying a house than sticking a sign in the yard and going to closing to pick up a check.
