8 Cold Weather Tips from a Cali Girl Born on a Tropical Island

You may Tropical Islelaugh at a Californian (born in Puerto Rico) blogging about tips for the cold weather (but I did grow in NYC).

Yes, my area of the Southland is not visited by those flaky white things that happen during winter in other places unlucky to be no where near our fair state.

But we still get some chilly weather. And we do have mountain and ski areas that we visit. Also we travel to visit our ice-bound families.

There, now that I have listed my qualifications, here are some recommendations:

  • Don't take extra hot showers. Hot showers can further dehydrate your skin.
  • Take soap free showers. Soap free means to stay away from products that contain detergents because they can remove protective, essential oils.
  • For the driest of dry skin, use plain old Vaseline, as a a sealer and a protectant. If the skin is already cracked, it does not sting.
  • Certain beverages are dehydrating, such as those containing alcohol or caffeine, so consume them in moderation.
  • Humidify the air in your home, especially in your bedroom so that healing and repair can take place while you sleep.
  • Don't forget sunblock. It's just as important during winter as it is in summer, experts say, especially during winter sports like skiing at high altitude.Snowy
  • Don't ignore hair and nails. They're made of the same basic compounds as the skin and they crack and split in similar fashion. B vitamin supplements can improve skin, hair and nails, especially during winter. For hair use a conditioner more frequently during winter.
  • Keep lifesaving supplies in your car. A plastic bin with a lid makes a good container. Some items to have:
    • Gloves, socks, hats and blankets.
    • Bottled drinking water and a few snacks, like nuts.
    • First-aid kit.
    • A flashlight with fresh batteries, and flares.
    • Cellphone charger.
    • If applicable, baby food and diapers.

Stay safe out there in the white stuff.

And if it gets too cold where you are, and you would to move to and share some California Sunshine in Ventura County, email me and we will talk in the sun!

Sandy- We don't get the those pretty littly white flakes down here in FL but I do remember when we lived in Northern VA for a few years.  One of the best pieces of advice was to have in my car items to survive in the cold.  And, we added a larger house humidifier than what came with the house to help combat the dryness.

Hi Kathy, You & I both lived in cold climates and made a better move, but, there are times I miss the falling snow.

Before I could write, I had to go fill the water kettle that sits on my wood stove... Because that is important here in the "cold country." This is a mild winter so far and very little snow, but we do have to keep some heat going.

That said, I have to tell you...

My eyes often play tricks on me, so when I glanced at your title in the blog roll, I did a double take. It looked like you said "Cold Weather Tips from a Call Girl.."

Thanks for the chuckle!

I hate to hear that wine is dehydrating since a nice glass of red is my favorite way to warm up when it's 30 degrees here! : )

Hi Margie, red wine is my favorite too, any time, any day, any temperature. I did see that post and am humbled by it, thank you.

Sandy - Great post.  We get our fair share of those flakey white things and, even when it's not coming down it can be VERY cold.  Dry skin can be a real problem.  I use lots of lotion - before bed and after I shower.  An extra layer of a moisturizing lotion means I can still drink the red wine!!  LOL!!

Best wishes,

Cyndi

Just add a glass or two of water for every glass of red wine. Lol. That's my winter life-saving tip! Just kidding...great list Sandy and you did a good job remembering those New York winters - it didn't sound at all like the list of a "beach baby." Have a great week. D

Hi Debb, great tip. That's what I should have titled it, since Marte  said the title first appeared to her as 'call girl' instead of Cali girl...lol.
