Creating a Web Site with WordPress, part 4, Linking Your Domain Name to Your Web Hosting Account

By
Real Estate Agent with Weichert, Realtors

Ok, I registered a domain name, and signed up for a web hosting account. What do I do next?

Now, you have to connect the two. Otherwise, when someone types in www.SuperDuperAgent.com, they won't be able to access your site. You do this by adding your web hosting nameservers to your domain name account.

Where do I find my nameservers?

When you signed up for your hosting account, they will have sent you an email with the technical information for your account. Included in that email should be at least 2 nameservers. If you deleted that email, just email support at your hosting company and they will send them to you again.

Got them. Now what?

Login to your domain registrar account, and bring up the details for your domain name. Each registrar is going to look different, but there will be a place to enter your nameservers. If you used GoDaddy, for example, see the pictures below. You will click on Nameservers, then click on Set Nameservers.

Then, select "I have specific nameservers for my domains", and enter your nameservers.

Just ok it, and you're all set. Depending on network traffic and settings, it can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to take effect.

Next time, Choosing a Theme...

Nicole, if you're educating yourself, you should be thinking of yourself as a "tech star in development", instead!

So can I just park a dummy name there until I get it like I want it and then update the nameserver info on my existing website?  I have several domain names I can use.

Thanks again for the information.
