Around Town: Kuiken Brothers in Emerson

Kuiken logoIt seems that everywhere you turn, businesses are going under. Not just recent businesses, either… businesses that seemed staying power in, and close ties to, their communities. It’s not all dismal, however; one business that’s bucking the trend is Kuiken Brothers, which in 2012 celebrates 100 years of business, and service.

The Kuiken Brothers’ history exemplifies the American Dream. With their parents, Nicholas, Henry, and Dirk Kuiken immigrated to the United States in 1890. Starting with the founding of the company in 1912, the brothers left their mark, building first a substantial number of homes in Fair Lawn, and then building a business that today employs nearly 300 people and has locations in Bergen County, the Pascack Valley, and even New York.

Here’s what I like about Kuiken Brothers: unlike some of the “superstores” out there that look like someone piled a bunch of lumber and doodads in an aircraft hangar and then went into hiding (I don’t know about you, but I find it challenging to get help when I really need it in some of these places), Kuiken’s Emerson location (at 246 Kinderkamack Road) has a staff that’s knowledgeable, helpful, and – rather importantly – available. And you’ll never have to worry about selection, either. There’s a lumber yard, millwork, bath and kitchen showrooms… in short, pretty much everything you need for your home, inside and out. Best of all, you’re not limited strictly to “stock” options; from millwork to cabinetry, you have plenty of custom options at your disposal. And did I mention that they also deliver?

The same ethos of service – to their customers, and to their community – exists in the company now as it did when it was founded in 1912, and is one very big reason that Kuiken Brothers has not only survived, but thrived in, the century since. Your money’s not going to some corporate office in Peoria. It stays local because it employs locals, and also because Kuiken Brothers gives back. Come to think of it, it’s also the best reason I can think of to recommend them to you.

You can find out more about Kuiken Brothers at their website, http://www.kuikenbrothers.com, including locations, hours, services offered, and a host of other information.
