Do You Spend Too Much Time At Your Desk?

stand up adjustable deskDo you spend too much time at your desk?

I know I do.  Ever since I started blogging and my online world expanded, I spend hours and hours and hours at my desk.  Many nights it seems the only time I get up is to grab a snack before finally signing off in the wee hours of the morning.

Not good.

Shortly after reading an article about the health consequences of sitting for too many hours  I came across an adjustable desk in a condo which we were touring.

With the flick of a switch the desk could be transformed from traditional sit-to-work height to the right height for you to stand. That desk immediately went on my must-buy list.

Stand-up desks are the new thing - and for good reason.  Between office jobs and hours online at home many of us spend way too much time sitting down.  For me, the hours I spend at night added to time in the car and at my desk at the office add up an unacceptable amount of sit-down time.

You'll find loads of posts about and photos of homemade standing desks online.  I'm opting for the adjustable version so I can alternate standing with sitting.

Switching to an adjustable desk is definitely on my to-do list for 2012.

I have seen those desks together with treadmills so you can walk while you work.  Great idea you have given me.

I am pretty bad about desktime mysef. Gotta read that article - I try to take breaks when desktime is lengthy but I can get pretty focussed. Since I have back problems that sometimes forces the issue. I LOVE the idea of an adjustable desk.

Hi Lynn ~ Thanks so much for the heads up about the B2B Blog Challenge. It might just get my groove back!

Hi Jane! I saw a video recently that someone had posted about a setup he created with a treadmill and his desk.  It made me a little dizzy! Since I've never been on a treadmill I think it's beyond my capabilities at the moment. What's that saying - you gotta stand before you can walk - or something like that.

Hi Jeff ~ The article that started it all was on Men's Health.  Lifehacker has several posts about it too and there's actually loads online.  I really like the Geek Desk that I linked to above - that was the one I came across in Somerville.

Sitting at a desk takes dedication, and there are days we need to spend some time at the computer.  BTW, your desk is way too clean.   I would not be able to take a photo and post mine.

Hi Scott ~ Ha! That's not my desk.  Here's mine - and it's the desk at my office - my desk at home is worse.

Hi Pat ~ I was determined to get one as soon as I saw one - I love the idea of an adjustable one that gives me the choice.

Hi Rob - It's like an archaeological dig to clean my desk.  And it's amazing how quickly it gets covered again. Yeegads.

I find if I don't have a desk...I have nothing to get cluttered.  So I sit in my recliner, do my work and keep a working file holder next to me.  Works for me!

Hi Sherry ~ That sounds enticing! Honestly - I've never met a bare surface I couldn't fill.  I switched my desk at work to a much larger space and still scan the area for an empty desk to plop my stuff on.

Hi Judy! I gotta confess - I've got two enormous sacks of empties in my car to bring back to the store.  How's this winter, huh?  I want to sing every time I go outside. Hurrah!

Elizabeth.. that is NOT your desk in the picture attached, right? The one with the Coke Cans? LOL  No one could really work that way. I'll have to check out these new desks you are talking about. Not sure Im a fan of standing for a long period of time, but if it adjusts, it would be a change of once in awhile.

Hi John!  Yes - that's my desk - and that's just about how it looks most days.  I clean it off - it fills right up.  What are you gonna do?

Elizabeth, this title piqued my curiosity when I waa commenting on your last one. I don't even want to read what sitting does to our health - but a desk that we could stand up and use is definitely not a bad idea! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Elizabeth,

I just read this post and I have to say, Yes! I spend too much time at my desk!  I could use a standing desk for sure.  I can tell by your desk that you are a busy lady, indeed, and that's a good thing!

I hope we get to do business together in Cambridge sometime.
