Members Sought for Ad Hoc Committee on Kentlands Firehouse

Kentlands Firehouse

The City of Gaithersburg is seeking nine interested members from throughout the Gaithersburg community to serve on an ad hoc committee to develop a Request For Proposal (RFP) for possible uses of the City-owned Firehouse in the Kentlands.  Members of the committee will assist staff in developing the RFP to solicit qualified adaptive reuse and/or redevelopment proposals for this property.

The Committee will be charged with reviewing information about existing site conditions, assessing the building’s potential as an adaptive reuse project and the site’s potential as a redevelopment parcel, developing a non-exclusive list of viable, cost-effective potential uses, and identifying major factors to be used in the final RFP, including projected use, timeline for completion, and possible funding sources.

The committee, which is expected to be appointed in February, will meet regularly, with work anticipated to be completed by the end of May, 2012.

Appointment to the committee will be made by the Mayor and City Council.  Interested community members should submit a letter of interest and resume/biography to:  Ad Hoc Firehouse RFP Committee, c/o Mayor Sidney Katz, 31 S. Summit Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD, 20877 or by e-mail to cityhall@gaithersburgmd.gov by 5 p.m. on January 27, 2012.

For more information on the committee and the Firehouse property, please contact Deputy City Manager Tony Tomasello at ttomasello@gaithersburgmd.gov or call 301-258-6310.

Roy  I am sure there is no end of adaptions that can be made to modify it for public use.  The City of Alexandria sold one in Olde Towne that was converted to a very popular restaurant.  Much of the interior was preserved including the firehouse pole

Roy~an exciting opportunity to take this beautiful building and keep its use ALIVE! I'm a firm believer that a building has a personality and a purpose and this one certainly hasn't outlived its purpose yet...good localism post to spotlight it.

Hi Roy-great looking structure. There is a historic one in Miami that was turned into a great restaurant and I toured one in Syracuse NY that was converted into loft styled condos. Endless posibilities!
