One of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make is where you are going to live. Once you go through the effort of finding a location and buying a home, you’ll most likely be there for several years, maybe a lifetime.

And so will your neighbors.

‘Good fences make for good neighbors’ may be an old saying about respecting the people next door, but there’s a lot of truth in how others living close by can affect your lifestyle and enjoyment of your home. Before buying a home, you need to do some research on the neighborhood and the people that will be living beside you. There are many things to considerwhen you venture out to find the right neighborhood for you and your family. Your lifestyle, income, place of employment and nearby amenities all factor into the equation.

Before you buy, take the opportunity to explore the area. Try visiting at different times of day. Look for signs of neglect in the homes surrounding the property you are interested in. Look for overgrown lawns, litter, or vandalism. No matter how diligent you might be at keeping your property looking good, if the home next to yours has a run-down, neglected appearance, it will drive your property value down.
