Are you really working with a REALTOR®?

By
Real Estate Agent with Syracuse Realty Group

Just because you are working with a real estate agent does not mean you are working with a REALTOR®. Not all licensees are equal.  Only those licensees that have chosen to join the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® and subscribe to a strict code of ethics are entitled to be called REALTORS®.  They are expected to maintain a higher level of knowledge of the buying and selling process and are committed to treating all parties to a transaction honestly.

REALTORS® have a wide variety of information available to them through the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®, which can be very beneficial to the buyer or seller. Not all transactions are equal either and having the ability to keep well informed assists the REALTOR® in navigating each individuals’ experience.

From this point forward, remember to ask if your real estate agent is really a REALTOR®.

I never get over the fact of how little a client researces an agent before signing up with them.  Example:  I chose my real estater agent because he/she is a friend of a friend.

On the other hand some use the realtor seal on their business cards but do not take the time to take the courses offered.

Edward& Celia  Exactly! People wouldn't go to just any lawyer or doctor but they will buy or sell a home without looking into an agents credentials.

Edward: I have to agree with you 100%  When I first started, I was on phone duty and the caller requested to speak only with someone who had many years of experience,"top" producer. I wanted to tell her that I had just done a deal with an agent who had been in the business 25+ years and I had to keep sending the contract back for her to correct all the mistakes. Simple things like the address of the property. These are the people who just pay their dues, take the required CE credits and many times repeat the same classes because they know it gives them the exact number of credits needed.

Mary, Most consumers have no idea the difference between a Realtor and an agent...big difference and this was a nice way to get the word out!

Lots of experienced Realtors do not bother to keep up with changing laws...many do not even know how to price a home since they are too busy working and not taking out  few hours to take a course offered by Realtor Board.

Dear Mary,

You are so right - the word has devolved just as KLEENEX became the word for paper handkerchives!
I do try to explain the difference each time I am able - including the Ethics classes required of R's.

 Have a happy day -
Lynn
