The 'Tall Trees' of Humboldt County, California

For homes with large trees nearby on the property, trimming the trees may result in lower heating and cooling costs.

In this area of California many properties have very large tall trees.  Most are Redwoods near the coast and Fir and Spruce further inland.  These are not ornamental trees which have limited height at maturity, in most cases the trees existed before the home was built and were left by the builder/developer.  They continue to grown in height and continue to develop branches their entire life.

Keeping the lower branches of these tree trimmed allows in more of the winter sun, that is low in the sky, to warm the home while the upper branches continue to shade the home on warm summer days when the sun is high in the sky.

The tall trees in some cases may eliminate the need for an air conditioner.  Keeping them trimmed to a reasonable height lowers the winter heating bills.
