I was a lucky one, I didn't have to go anywhere there was no active war and the draft ended right after Vietnam in 1973. I did decide to join but never made it past basic training at Lackland.
Two people in my immediate family served, my father in Korea and my Father in Law in WWII (yes, the big one). My father was very official looking in his MP uniform serving as a sentry to Eisenhower, he was proud of those days but was happy to come home I am sure. My father in law was a medic and basically thinks that anything can be fixed with gauze and white tape (he thinks he is MacGyver).
I attended a wedding a couple of years ago, my father in law wore his various Military Service Medals on his tuxedo. He is proud of them as he should be. A young Marine came up to him and saluted, he said "thank you for serving our country sir". Myfather in law was taken back and didn't know what to say then came up with the perfect answer "your welcome and thank you". It was a moment that meant so much to both of them and I won't soon forget.
On this Veterans Day the message is simple, to all of the men and women that have, are and will serve
Thank you
