~ TRUST ~
Since the time I was little and as far back as I can remember, Mom always told me I needed to always tell her the truth. She said she would always know if I wasn't. And I believed her. Why wouldn't I? After all, I respected and trusted her. She was my mom. When told me that telling the truth would allow others to trust me and in return gain their respect and earn me a reputation of being an honest person.
I learned this at an early age and as I got older, I learned Mom was right. Her truthfulness with me helped me throughout my life; both personal and in business. I was respected and in turn, trusted; trusted by my friends and co-workers alike. So throughout my life, I have always been truthful with whomever I am with, even if it was uncomfortable for me to admit I had made a mistake. Once you tell someone a lie, and they find out, you will never gain that trust back, and you will loose any respect that you had from that person. By being a person of my word, I earned respect and a reputation for such.
Recently I adopted a dog, Wrigley, from a shelter. I don't know anything about his past; how old he is, how he ended up at the shelter, if he had a good home, or if he was abused. But what I do know is that in order for him to become a good pet, he needs to trust me. He needs to learn that he will have a good loving home and that I won't abuse him, only love him. But he needs to learn to trust me. And in return, I will gain his respect, his trust and his love. And then he will become a good pet. That will take time, and I have time.
What I have learned from adopting Wrigley, is that trust comes from not only people I do business with, and people in my personal life, but from animals. I think animals have a good sense of people. Have you ever had a pet that didn't like someone and learned down the road that that person wasn't a good person? It's crazy how an animal has that sense. I think we, humans, have that same sense as well. We either tune it out or second guess ourselves. We should trust ourselves as often as we trust others.
