What Does It Mean to Be an Ambassador of ActiveRain?

Services for Real Estate Pros with Suplari, Inc.

Image Kookai_nakWhat does it mean to be an Ambassador of ActiveRain?

I am sure that nearly everyone member of ActiveRain has seen the orange badge and the orange star reserved for the Ambassadors of ActiveRain.  So that begs the question: what does it mean to become an Ambassador of ActiveRain and how do I become an Ambassador?   A recently anointed Ambassador told ActiveRain that her ActiveRain Ambassador badge means more to her than her college degree.

A Little History

Shortly after announcing the ActiveRain RainMaker program in 2009, the ActiveRain Ambassador program was launched.   As many new, one of the WOW factors of ActiveRain was receiving a call from Bob or another member as soon as you signed up.  At a minimum, every member of ActiveRain receives emails and comments on their blogs to welcome them to the community.  The Ambassador program was launched to recognize the members that go out of their way to welcome and educate others in the community.   As recognition, Ambassadors received a special badge, a free RainMaker account (plus Localism and Outside Blog) and compensation when a free member becomes a RainMaker.

2011 & 2012

Fast-forward to 2011.  ActiveRain has 127 Ambassadors who bear the ActiveRain flag.  The Ambassador Program has been a big success in terms of developing a core group on ActiveRain who welcome and train others in the community.  None of the current Ambassadors receive compensation to upgrade free members to RainMakers.  85% of the Ambassadors continue to be active on ActiveRain.  Roughly 15% have not blogged recently and are not proactive in the community.

Coming to 2012, we wanted to make sure our Ambassadors continue to be engaged and are committed to educating the community.   We sent this email to the Ambassadors.  The intent of the email was to make sure the Ambassadors are engaged, that they understand that being an ActiveRain Ambassador is important and that we expect Ambassadors to blog, teach and engage with the community.  As you know, with social media, "the conversation" has moved from only being on ActiveRain to broader social media sites and circles.  We hope ActiveRain Ambassadors love ActiveRain and will be supportive of ActiveRain in social conversations, regardless of it is on ActiveRain or elsewhere.  ActiveRain is not perfect and we are not expecting our Ambassadors to be puppets or talking heads by any stretch of the imagination.

60% of the Ambassadors have already contacted ActiveRain to affirm their commitment.  Awesome!

We also understand that ActiveRain may not be a priority for some people.  For example, two of our Ambassadors are retiring from real estate.

This email to some of the Ambassadors has caused some discussion, where members are questioning ActiveRain's intentions or my (Niki Parekh's) intentions.   Yes, many many members have made significant contributions to build ActiveRain into the community it is today.  I do not want to undervalue or devalue their contributions in any way.

Ambassadors are the critical members of ActiveRain who are proactively paying it forward by welcoming and educating the community.

We want the Ambassador Badge and status on ActiveRain to mean something important and be special.

Becoming an Ambassador

We will be opening the Ambassador program up in the near future to new ambassadors so stay posted.  We would love to have you represent ActiveRain.

First of all, let me say, GREG NINO FOR AMBASSADOR!  :-)

Secondly, I'm with Sally--My immediate response was right back at Kerrie--something like a "but, of COURSE!"  I took absolutely no offense to the email.  I have presided over neighborhood associations and committees within our Realtor® association and know that everyone is included in groups who are of said title.  I took no offense to it and in fact, think that if there IS an ambassador who is working tirelessly and just can't continue to do what they've been doing, it was an excellent 'out' for them to end their tenure.

In every group in which you participate in life, you're going to have those who are OVERLY dedicated and those who do nothing and everything in between.  Just the same, you'll have varying interpretations of a conveyed message.  I would not fret over the email--just remember, you can't please all of the people all of the time!

AND, lastly, let me add that I'm SOOO glad to have my lil' brother back (Sheldon!) WooHoo!

I am so on board and after I get done with my in-law weekend visit I plan to write some tutorials :)

One thing I would like to suggest and I say this with only love:

Not everyone is a fan of Renee Burrows and I was extremely disappointed we didn't have a raincamp meetup in December.  I held one when I was hella busy in September just taking over being a mangaging broker for a couple of weeks.  It would be nice if the other ambassadors could step up to the plate.  I could have at least gone to a little lunch or dinner meet-up but didn't have the time to schedule the event like I did last time.

I would be honored to do it in the future but only after other resources are exhausted.  It gets boring boring boring when the same person does it all the time.

now I know, thank you.  I reached out once in the beginning to an ambassador who still wears the badge, she was very rude and not helpful at all.  I am so grateful I stuck with active rain and just dismissed her lack of courtesy and helpfulness as someone having a bad day.

Thanks to all the other ambassadors out there who I have read and followed.  I have yet to ever call one again tho

Hello Niki,

The ambassadors that I have run into in the short few months that I have been here have been great.  I hope you do keep the program open to everyone.

Niki, gosh, I guess some people are touchy and think you're going to take away their orange stripe and star... My personal Ambassadorship has been in my community to spread the word and encourage people to sign up for Active Rain. Have they? Not many, but I know they read us, I know they do :)

Niki, please count me in as an ambassador.  Educating our real estate colleagues has always been top priority for me, as you can see from my blogs and the great feedback I've received.  My passion is to "raise the bar of professionalism" for our industry.  Together, we all succeed!  Thank you, Regina P. Niki, thanks for educating us about the Ambassador program.  Like many, I though members of the community were tapped because of their AR commitment and level of activity.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!  The Ambassador program is one of the greatest parts of ActiveRain.  Stay tuned as we are going to do some cool things for formal and informal Ambassadors alike.

Dear Niki -
Being an Ambassador was a goal for me. I am proud to have achieved that position. Another goal for me was to encourage other AR members to "touch base" with the guidelines and philosophy of the founders of AR.  Their vision laid the foundation for which we are all so grateful.  I achieved the second goal by sponsoring the 2012 Back2Basics Challenge. The Challenge offered me the opportunity to interact with over 100 other AR members. I enjoyed assisting them along the way as they pursued the post requirements. Over and over, I heard how important AR was to the person. It's certainly important to me.
YES!!!  I definitely want to remain an Ambassador.
Thanks for asking!
Have a happy day -

I obviously missed the first blog in 2009 about the program, or I would have attempted to sign up. But I did get Brad to come to our office to talk about the benefits of blogging.

I also wondered what made someone an ambassador -- and I thought that perhaps it's by the number of people invited to be on Active Rain, by the number of featured posts, by the number of associates, number of times one attended a Rain Camp or Active Rain University class, or by the success stories shared.

Would be interested to see what the next round of applications would look like.

Thank you for clarifying. I think the common impression is that being an Ambassador is based both on points and service to the AR community.
