For Whom the Blog Tolls OR Who Do You Blog For?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Around Atlanta GA RE License #296541

I've been reading a number of blog entries over the past couple of weeks and I've been wondering:

Who do YOU blog for?

blog

I don't think there's any one right answer, as a blog can be basically whatever you want it to be.

Personally, I am trying to mold and shape our blog into something that can be a resource not only for our past and current clients and neighbors, but also for potentially future clients. We try to include not only our listings (which helps to give them added exposure on the web) but also area events and news, as well as real estate related tips. In an ideal world, this is what our blog would be. We also hope to improve our standing on google for certain keywords, such as Country Club of the South (a neighborhood where we do a lot of business), Alpharetta, and Johns Creek. We have found that this blog has helped with that.

b&w blogI don't often post "Members Only" posts to Active Rain, because I feel that, if I am going to take the time to write a blog entry, I want it to be something for the public - hopefully something of interest to someone out there in cyberspace who may happen to find my entry and be able to use it and enjoy it.

That is my hope.

green blog

I have noticed, though, that a lot of bloggers on AR post mainly "Members Only" posts. It makes me wonder if they see blogging as simply a way to connect with other REALTORS® (nothing wrong with that!) OR if they have another blog that they use as a "public" blog. I know there are several who have multiple blogs.

So I ask...Who do YOU blog for? I am truly interested in your answers, so I hope I'll get many!

I am at about a 75% for the consumer and 25% for members only. I do a lot of localism blogs and they are getting me exposure in the area I work. It is amazing how in a couple of hours they show up on google page 1 :)

Seriously, Most of my stuff is agent directed.  I love helping other agents grow their business and AR provides that interaction for me.

Maura,
We are like you in that we post primarily for consumers.  We post our listings, market reports, and local activities and events.  We are also hoping for some "google love".

Maura,

I blog because I heard you speak today and you invited me here. I'm just glad that you are "trying to mold and shape your blog" and not growing mold! We Realtors have enough concerns with mold in properties we sell.

I like your blog. So good luck with it.

I Blog mostly geared toward Consumers, so most of my posts are for Localism.  I've only posted a couple that were "Members Only". I do, however, appreciate the Realtor advice and resources here....such a great tool for learning.  I do give input and advice in that regard, but typically by way of blog comments.

Hi, Karen! Thanks for stopping by and reading. The "both" vote seems to be a prevalent one in the comments!

Hi, Natalie! That's kind of what we are trying to do - make more of our posts Localism-appropriate. Thanks for commenting!

Hi, Christi! Thanks for your input. I defintiely don't shy away from the "Members Only" when I have something to say or need advice, but my blogging time is sometimes very short!

Hi, Vickie! I agree - I need my valuable blog time to go toward consumers, but the advice on AR is invaluable. I love to comment on others' posts - there's so much to learn!

I was mostly doing Members Only and then read some great tips from a blog coach.  The main one was to blog one members only to every ten localism posts.  That's what I am trying to do now and it is working.  Just the other day, someone from a well known publication asked my broker who I was.  She told my broker, that I am all over the place!  Sounds like posting to localism is the exposure agents need.  The other important tip was not quantity but quality matters more.

Hi, Donna! That sounds like an effective plan - one in ten posts for members only. And I agree about quality over quantity, though there is an awful lot out there to blog about and still keep the quality of your posts high!

I'd love to read the blog coach tips you refer to - did you read them online?

Thanks for reading and commenting!

Hi, Maura:  I only blog on AR for industry related stuff.  I maintain a separate wordpress blog at www.liveinalpharetta.com/blog that is 100% focused on Alpharetta and North Fulton Real Estate.  The person for whom I'm blogging is the potential new client.  I stay on topic for those people because i want them to know exactly what they are going to get when they visit (or hopefully revisit) my blog.  Plus i think that google/yahoo appreciate the focus, too.  Just my 2 cents worth.

Maura,

As you have noticed, members have different goals for their blogging. I'm mainly doing it for present and future clients and secondly for building up networking relationships with the membership. Some are here only to network, some to socialize and so forth.
