Recycle - How Far Will You (or your government) Go

Dear readers,

Today is the day that I spend some early morning time in the garage, preparing the recyclables. Here in College Station, Texas we have to separate our plastics, bottles (only clear and brown), aluminum & steel cans, and newspaper. Each category goes into its own plastic bag (provided by the City of College Station) and then out on the curb.

Our friends in larger cities have it easier. In San Antonio, my relatives put everything into a blue bin and drag it out to the curb. Residents don't have to sort or put items into bags. In Austin, friends put their items in large blue bins with wheels, which are almost as large as the city's garbage cans (hint, hint).

At least we have curbside recycling here in College Station. Our sister city, Bryan, doesn't offer curbside recycling at all.

I have a recycling "tipping point," as I'm sure many of you do. It is the point where recycling is more trouble than its worth. With me, if I have to load items in my car and haul them somewhere, it just aint going to happen. I know others that don't recycle because of sorting and bagging.

College Station doesn't accept green glass, so into the landfill it goes. I do have one friend who saves her green bottles and drives them to Austin every few months. I can hear the talk at the Austin recycling center. "Here comes that crazy Aggie lady with her Volvo full of green glass from College Station."

Common sense tells me that we need to be thinking like Austin, where the goal is to need larger recycling containers than trash containers, and not Bryan, where residents have to haul their items.

Have a great Wednesday...and remember if its your day to get the recyclables out to the curb..."Out by 8, don't be late."

Blue skies,

Sam White

Yes it gets crazy after a while. In the "old days" Kids brought back bottles for the deposit. It wasn't called recycling then. I know there was many a Saturday movie I got to see because I collected bottles. Maybe we need to bring that back more

What can we do to promote Green Glass Recycling here in the BV.
What can we do to promote Green Glass Recycling here in the BV.  I have alot of green glass as well, I HATE to throw it out.  Do you think your neighbor would mind a few more green bottles in here volvo?  I would be happy to add my collection of green glass.
