Busy schedules and fast-food restaurants have been chipping away at family mealtime for so long now that it's often difficult to get your family together to share a meal.
And, as a real estate professional, you often are showing homes or writing up contracts during this important time.
But mealtime is not just about food -- it's been proven that eating together as a family is important for the physical and emotional health of children as well. Some benefits include:
- Consistency -- Having a planned meal brings a consistent schedule back into family life.
- Improved Communication -- Meals are an ideal time to discuss values and get a hint of problems in your kid's life. Some studies conclude family mealtime makes it less likely for teens to use tobacco, alcohol or marijuana.
- Better Nutrition -- Eating a planned meal ensures your family is eating more of the right foods and not eating too many of the wrong foods.
- Emotional Health -- Teens often become depressed during their high school years -- sharing at mealtime give you the opportunity to evaluate your child's mental state.
- Fewer Weight Problems -- Assuming the "cook" is nutrition-wise, better eating habits lead to a healthier body.
- Improved Grades -- Research has shown that students who have family mealtime together get better grades!
So, while you can't make it to every meal, even just have dinner 2 to 3 times a week with the family helps.
Bon apetite.
