New Agent Motivation - How To Do It In Todays Market ?

By
Real Estate Agent with Long & Foster Real Estate Companies- Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania

So you are a brand new real estate agent. You got your license, you got your cape, you signed up with the broker of your choice, and you hit the street.

But now what? How do you keep youself motivated in todays market? As you plod along, day after day, trying this, testing that, trying to build a sphere of influence in a market where buyers can often be few and far between, hiding in the shadows like ghosts, ready to dissapear in an instant once you spy them.

As I sat in a sales meeting this morning, and I looked around the room, I was reminded how fortunate I was to land at Coldwell Banker Elite. Sure it is a great brokerage, but as anywhere, it is the people that make the difference. After spending a number of years working for a builder, I dove into real estate full time about a year ago, although I have had my license since 2000.

From the moment I walked in the door, every single agent could not have been more welcoming, with offers of help should I ever need it. I still remember Vince McKamy almost leaping over the desk, with a firm handshake and a smile a mile wide, to welcome me aboard. Of course, he then offered my a whole bunch of desk duty slots, but it is the thought that counts.

I know a lot of experienced agents work from home, and I think that is great, one of the true benefits of this business. But I think new agents are like kids, and kids are like sponges. I think new agents can greatly benefit from working in the office, soaking up the atmosphere, absorbing the wealth of information that is available in the form of "war" stories from veteran agents, and just generally getting into the "flow" of the business. I know it made a huge difference for me.

So if you are a new agent, I encourage you to spend some time working at the office, or even just hanging around at the office. If you ever think one of us "veterans" can lend hand, please don't hesitate to ask.

(Buying us coffee is a great ice-breaker by the way)

While we may seem busy, we are always willing to help. Just our way of paying it forward.

Hi Kevin, thanks for the advice.  I am a new Realtor (about 2 months). Several people have made the comment like, "you sure did enter the market at the worst time".  Regardless, my chin is up and I keep plodding along, using every technique given to me. I am very optimistic!  You are 100% right about spending time in the office, it helps to keep you motivated and learn from the veterans.

-Thanks!

I am brand new (about 10 months) in the Massachusetts real estate market.  Although I am a well-known citizen in the communities of Danvers, MA and Hamilton, MA where I have lived most of my life, no one knows I am involved in real estate yet. In the area of getting your name out there, the best advise I have is to find a niche and market it.

My best advise to better your productivity has already been posted above by Scott -- Find a good mentor!  I have an excellent mentor here at Keller Williams who offers excellent suggestions and constructive feedback.  Accountability is solely on you!  There are a lot of "professional" job coaches out there but they are a waste of money.  In my opinion, if you cannot hold yourself accountable and keep motivated, you'll struggle.

Finding a good mentor and holding yourself accountable are the keys to your success!

Keller Williams Realty offers the best and most comprehensive training and follow-up programs in the market.  Most free of charge as well.  I have found great success at Keller Williams.  If you are local to the North Shore of Massachusetts, please feel free to give me a call and I would be more than happy to share with you valuable insight about possibly joining the Keller Williams team.

If you are working in Maryland, I have contacts in the Odenton, MD market that could help you as well.  Especially in the Fort Meade / Piney Orchard areas.

I have seen few that are going to be successful stay away form the office in this market. You have to remember the drop out rate was high in the good times. Keep interested and learn all you can.

I'm laughing about your Vince experience.  I can totally see that.

Coldwell Banker Elite is definitely one of the most welcoming companies.  I have been licensed for 3 years but it wasn't until I switched companies and joined the Bacon Group, now The Bacon-Baysden Home Selling team did my business get started.  It was all about being there and having the support of other agents which made the difference.

I am one of the few agents that go to the office everyday.  Sure has made a difference in my success.

Also being fairly new in RE, I started with a Broker/Mentor that has been totally amazing with her sharing & knowledge and wisdom.  We meet regularly at the office, too, to get that time to feed off, sound off and learn.  That has been a very important of growing as an Agent.
