NV, Las Vegas: Spaghetti Bowl

interchangeAnyone who has driven around Las Vegas for any length of time knows all about the 'infamous spaghetti bowl'....the intersection of Interstate-15 and U.S. Highway 93/95.  It has for many years caused traffic jams, backed up for miles on end.  Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) was given funds to improve this section of the freeway (I swear we've lived here 10 years and it's been going on ever since we moved here!).  All along it was promised that when the work was complete the freeway would flow like a dream.  I'm here to say that I took that freeways to and from someplace a couple times this week and....the work is about complete....I flew right through the 'Spaghetti Bowl' at 7 a.m. this morning and then going home at 4 p.m. this afternoon....it was a dream, there are 4-5 lanes each way plus an HOV lane that is not quite done.  This makes for 10 lanes across the freeway!  Easy access to the interchanges to the freeways that cross it.   I'll be driving this more often!

I've sworn for years I would not fight the traffic and congestion on that freeway but it's now time to change my mind!  Check it out for yourself.  My understanding is the HOV lanes will be open before Thanksgiving.  If your in town over the holidays, or even if you currently live in Vegas, take a trip using the Spaghetti Bowl....you won't be sorry!

Mary, That is great news!  I heard it was improved but I'm glad to hear it from someone who drove on it during rush hour.  I try to avoid the spaghetti bowl at those prime times but maybe I'll try it now.  Thanks for the update!

I've never heard of the spaghetti bowl but if I ever get out that way I'll remember.

Mary-That was so funny reading that you have a spaghetti bowl too.  We have the same thing here in Utah and I'll tell you, I've found myself on the wrong side of the noodle many times since it was all redone.  It's a very positive thing.  We just all need to adjust to the great stuff.

The HOV lanes were open on the 95 north from the spaghetti bowl today.  With so many lanes open on the 95 we didn't even need the HOV!  Now they just need to expand the 15 to hold the same capacity!

In this area, it was the "Mixing Bowl" that was a really scary merge from the Capitol Beltway onto I-95 South.  Now, after years of construction, it's at least as congested as it used to be, though a little less frightening.  Ah, traffic!

That's funny.  I've lived in Las Vegas 21 years & finally had to take a break from all that traffic by dividing our time between two markets.  Now it's improved since I'm only 50% affected by it? I've only been semi-gone for 30 days!!  That seems really really wrong for some reason!  :)

They give us more lanes and then take them away (HOV).  Go figure!

It was pretty smooth going through the Spaghetti Bowl on all of my trips to NAR last week, but the I-15 is still a little stop and go. Still, it's nice to see some progress on our traffic challenges.

HOV Las Vegas

Oh yeah! Those las vegas HOV lanes are open now. Of course no one is in them and as of now they are a total waste of lane after the standard rush hours. They are 24x7 because NDOT says Vegas is a 24x7 city. A TV station did a car count for 1 hour at 1 am of cars using the HOV lane.....NONE.

does not matter anyway, generally I see that the cars in the "passing" lane are going faster than the ones in teh HOV lane anyway.
