HyperLink Hijackers!!!!! - YOU ARE NOW BLOCKED!

So today I see a good post by some realtor east of me.  I click on his link and open the blog post.  Good catchy title.  It appears that it may even be a great blog post.  I click on the post and WALLLLAAAA....There it is!

I just decide to leave his post for good.  I make note of his name because it's the third time I've been hijacked by him.  You see, on his header bar, he intentionally puts the hyperlinks as the exact same color as his banner or bar.  That means once I'm on his page,

I'm stuck.  Really???  Is This Your Value Proposition? You want to edcucate your clients, not force them somewhere they don't want to go

People are asking where is this?  On the header bar that has the hyperlinks from left to right that start with "University, Search, Groups,... and finishes with My Home."

They just make the link and the back ground color the same so that you can't find your way out.

I've posted about people who don't know the difference and who are accidentally doing this.  It's usually a newbie.  On my post, some lawyer said that he did it intentionally.  My light switch turned on.  I couldn't believe that some people do that intentionally.

I can't stand those who are doing this on purpose.

This realtor is pretty good on Active Rain.  It's not like he's a newbie.  He's pretty savvy with his site too, so I came to the conclusion after perusing his posts that this is intentional.  This stuff drives me nuts.  You're best value proposition is to trap people onto your site like a bad case of spam.  I left the post and then blocked him.

Here's the bottom line:

  1. I came to your post because I wanted to read it;
  2. Ultimately, I'd like to read the post,
  3. Then comment on the post,
  4. Then leave....

But when you take away the part of allowing me to leave, I won't even come...anymore...EVER!

I want to add value to people.  I want to serve people.  People can come and go on my site as they please.  My value proposition isn't the mouse trap that is like Hotel California...you can check in, but you can't check out.  So Mr. Big Shot A.R. hijacker, go hijack another traveler because my travels will never fly your airline again.

I referred 16 contracts out last year to some great realtors.  Even if I wanted to, I couldn't refer you business since you want to to trap your clients, not serve them.

JOhn....I just hopped on your site to take a look....but I didn't look through everything.  What a frustration!

Valerie...take a look at the bar on top where you can click, blogs, search, etc.

Luis....too bad, isn't it!

I didn't realize you could change those tabs - where can you even do that?  (Not that I want to, of course . . .)

Hi Larry,  The tactic you describe is so beyond me but it seems very shortsighted doesn't it ?!?!

Larry, I didn't know that could be done. Very strange indeed. Not a way to create relationships. Leave it to an attorney who says they do it intentionally. wow

I wrote a similar post when I first joined and it was then I realized some people did it on PURPOSE.. ugh... I get the idea, but its still annoying. I wouldn't block anyone cause I know where all the links are but its still irritating. Thanks for pointing it out YET AGAIN.. maybe one day they'll get it. ;-)

Larry, Thanks for pointing out this behavior. It's not only unprofessional it's childish! Potential clients must feel that this person is desperate and more than a little smarmy.

Larry, I get it now. Where the customize ActiveRain is the menu text can be changed to the menu color background. I've seen this before, and just thought the blogger didn't know how to make the menu text a different color. I agree with Nancy, still that is a little smarmy.

My initial beef is that so many newbies do it on accient.  So....me being Mr. Anal mamsy pamsy, want to help by pointing it out.  But then....I discovered that there are some serious people who do it on purpose.  It's amazing!!!!

Larry, I guess the idea is to "drive" everyone to your site, but to capture them?  That would make any consumer mad.  And would you trust them not to railroad you into a deal?  Bad business if you ask me!

I haven't experienced this but thanks for the heads up.  No one appreciates the "bait and switch" tactic, and consumers certainly won't put up with this.

Hi Larry! This is one of my pet peeves on AR. I also wrote a post about it a while back. Someone commented on my post that newbies are taught to do this on AR tutorials. I found that hard to believe, but it might be so. Anyway, I am always annoyed by this practice, and I end up using the back button to get out of their post.

Yes, I find this annoying, too.  Unfortunately, I remember them teaching and encouraging this in Active Rain University and I find that sad.

Larry,

I'm not sure I've seen this tactic but I'm sure I will sooner or later. I sometimes get email advertising from friends who've had there account hi-jacked. When I ask them they always say "What! I didn't send that".

Needless to say I don't open anything that looks suspicious.

I'm sorry, but I guess I don't understand why someone would do this...  Sounds awfully frustrating and that it would ultimately result in what you described -- losing readership. What's the point???
