Memed in Hampstead, New Hampshire

I too read about this new phenomenom in blogsville on Mary McNights blog
Tag I'm It: Meme Marketing and What 5 things you don't know about me.

I thought it was a great idea and then I read Jay and Francy Thompsons blog The First Active Rain Meme.

Then lo and behold I got tagged by my dear friend Ann Cummings MEMED I've Been Memed.

I guess I have to write about 5 things that others do not know about me.

So here goes..

photo Bamberg, Germany

 1. I was born in Bamberg, Germany June 3rd 1954 and I was adopted by Joseph and Pauline McGillicuddy. I was in an orphanage until I was adopted on September 22nd 1955. My birth name is Holger Rainer Bezold and I didn't find out what that was until i was 35 yrs old.

2. I hitch hiked from Atlanta, Ga. to Monterey, Ca. in 3 1/2 days back in 1974 the longest I had to wait for a ride was 8 and 10 hours just outside San Antonio and  El Paso, TX. All other rides I waited only about 10 minutes. I met some really wonderful people and just one girl that was a little freaky who wanted to take me to a party but I told her I needed to get out at the next exit. She was weird.. I got picked up by a lady in Oxnard, Ca. with her little child in a volkswagon who when I opened the door asked if I was going to kill her. I said no, of course. She brought me back to her place and fed me dinner and let me use her shower and she let me call back to Atlanta to let my then girlfriend know I was ok. She brought me to Santa Barbara after dinner and told me I would get a ride if I stood in this certain spot across the street. I said my goodbyes walked across the street and stuck out my thumb and got a ride by the first car that came by and he dropped me off in Monterey,Ca. How cool was that?

3. I met a lady in a bar that was having Jean Rousseau's baby. Jean Rousseau was the keyboard player for Cat Stevens in the Catch Bull at Four Album. After she had her baby she invited us to the Oakland Colliseum to watch the concert and visit the band after the show. I sat right next to Cat Stevens and listened as he was talking about the band and how they played that night. I enjoyed listening to his music but I was not that impressed with his egotistical behavior.

4. I worked at John Gardiner's Tennis Ranch in Carmel Valley, Ca. in 1974-75. I was a chef's assistant and Mrs. Gardiner asked me one day to get a ping pong table out of the recreation building for Clint Eastwood because he wanted to play ping pong later in the day. I never did see Clint but I did see Johnny Carson, Vivian Vance, Rhonda Fleming and missed John Wayne by a week. John Wayne was there the week before I started working there.

 5. My son Justin graduated from Minnetonka High School in Minnetonka, Minnesota in June of 1998. The day after graduation he took me flying in an airplane that he had been learning how to fly in at the Flying Cloud arport. I had taught him how to drive a stick shift car just a year and a half before that. I was pretty impressed at his accomplishment at the age of 18. He started flying lessons when he was about 15 due to a friend who's father worked at the airport.

"Hi Jay"

Nice wrap up of where you came from. Germany. Cool.

Cat Stevens is a very strange man. I should have known he had an ego issue. :)

You sound like a very proud Dad.

TLW "The Lovely Wife"...Come On There's More To Your Story Than This. LOL. Let's Hear It. ROAR!

TLW I am a proud dad and I do love Cat Stevens music and I think hge has gone off the deep end.

Nick M.  yes that is the town square of Bamberg and we want to go back too. Monika was born about 20 miles away from me. I was a little nervous but he did great and I am here to tell all about it. That's even better.

Parachute funny..

Thanks for reading Leigh, I may not have gone to college but my travels back and forth to both coasts was truly an education most would die for. I truly met some interesting people and I am proud of my accomplishments  along the way.

John Wayne was certainly an icon.

Sounds like a great trip. There's definitely something to be said for real-world experience versus book knowledge. Amazing that you and Monika started just 20 miles apart, then traveled thousands, and finally met. I've always wanted to take a tennis vacation (in fact, just posted a tennis pic on my blog) - it looks like it would be a great way to actively relax. Thanks for sharing!

Brian, I wouldn't doubt it if they expanded their Tennis Ranch. It was extremely popular 30 yrs ago especially with a lot of big wigs showing up all the time. Thanks for stopping by, Jay.

John I've never been a big tennis player but I ejoyed working there as I had at least 2-3 meals a day free along with my room. Not bad for a twenty yr. old on his own 3000 miles away from home.

It is ironic about me and Monika 2 soul mates finaly getting back together.

Thanks Jay

Jay, that is some interesting life you have led so far, and since you are only still a kid, you have plenty more to experience.

Thanks George it was very interesting when I was a lot younger. Now I feel more reserved about things and of course times have really changed and I wouldn't think of doing some of the things today that I did back then.

All a part of growing up I guess.

Thanks Jay

Jay, I think I missed this because for some reason I never clicked you as an associate! That has been corrected lol

I'm impressed that someone can go cross country in their OWN car in that short a time, let alone hitch-hiking. What a great experience, loved the stories about the girl saying 'are you going to kill me' lmao  You know it's funny, hitch hiking was such a part of that era. I only hitch hiked when my parents forced me to move with them (imagine that) to Strongsville from Cleveland. It meant the baseball games were farther away; I hitched a few times but just wasn't the same experience as your x country trip. How neat.

Your son looks great in that plane. And Johnny Carson and Vivian Vance; wow! We've been talking about Cat Stevens for an hour at least, and I just remembered the name of the song I was humming: Moon Shadow lolol

Did you ever think about staying in California?

Carole, I met my son's mom in a bar in Monterey and she was going to the University of Georgia at Athens at the time. When the tennis ranch closed I hitch-hiked back to Atlanta. I only made it as far as New Orleans when I decided to take a bus.

On the return trip I made it to L.A. at Interstate 5 and met a gal who was also hitch-hiking to Florida. I still remember her name, it was Pepe (pron. Pep A). she had an Afgan dog with her and we hooked up together and she finally left me in Baton Rougue to go see some people she knew. I continued on. It took me 6 days to get to New Orleans. I was beat and fed up with hitch hiking.

Then my son's mom and I stayed in GA for a few yrs. and then I was transferred to Mpls. and then we split and I moved back NH and met Monika and life is GOOD.

That's me in a nut shell.

Thanks Jay

Jay, great post.

I loved the hitchhiking story. My... how times have changed. I've got a twinge of jealousy over the Cat Stevens event... although I probably would have been put off by his attitude as well.

My wifes family lives in Eden Prairie, my nephew got interested in flying enough at the Flying Cloud Airport that he opted to attend Embry Riddle to become a commercial pilot (has graduated and is amassing hours)

Angus I lived in Eden Praire for about a year. That was where we were living when my son was born. I think it was called Garrison Way. That was in 1980. I reallly enjoyed Mpls. it was a neat city.

My son went to Auburn University and took Aviation Management he wanted to be a commercial Pilot too but when 9-11 hit it dried up a lot of opportunities for him, so he says. He isn't even interested in the airline field anymore. He was looking into air traffic control but was talked out of it by his mother. Too stressful I guess.

Thanks Jay
