Indoor Gardening with Basil

How lovely it is to use fresh herbs in cooking.  It's sweet to trek out to the home garden and clip herbs as needed, but if your home is in the Denver to Boulder vicinity that pleasure isn't available in the winter.

So ... grow herbs indoors!

I haven't done a lot of this yet, but will increase my indoor herb gardening, because I'm so happy with the results with my basil plants.

These are growing in pots, which are in an AeroGarden 3.  I'm using this equipment wrong, I'll tell you up front. The plants are supposed to grow directly in the water - no soil at all.  But I wasn't happy with the results when I grew plants that way.

I had two basil plants in a pot outside last summer, and when the cold temps arrived I transplanted them into smaller pots that would fit inside the AeroGarden.

I have to tell you - they have done better under these lights than they did outside.  Whenever I want some fresh basil for pizza, spaghetti, a sandwich, I just snip some and it grows back quickly.

The plants are sitting on my desk, so often throughout the day I will pinch off a little piece of leaf and the scent fills the room. Heavenly!

Let me know if you have experience with indoor herb growing. I'd like to know what herbs you've grown, and what equipment you used.

Happy Gardening!

That is so cool. Growing herbs is a passion of mine, but now I just dry them and have them for winter use that way. If I can be so bold as to make a suggestion...try the African Blue basil or Summerlong Basil. The blue has a very strong odor and taste, but I like it. It's a perennial and so many basils aren't. The Summerlong never blots and is a great choice for container gardening year round. But I only grow it in the summer. It does grow green with no flowers all summer...even in intense heat. The taste is traditional and everyone I've shared it with just loves it.

Likewise, I love fresh herbs!  In Arizona we have Rosemary bushes growing year round and it's nice to have that scent inside as well.  I purchased a basil plant from the grocery at $2.99 and it had tons of leaves on it.  It lasted for a while in the dirt soil, but I haven't tried your method.  Would love to see the comments here.  Best of luck!

Great tip. I once had a sunroom that grew basil beautifully, into bushes actually. I've tried in my current kitchen windowsill and just haven't had a lot of luck. I get spindly, four inch plants. There's nothing like cooking with fresh basil if you can make it work.

Hi, Debbie - never be shy about offering tips to me, I LOVE them.  I'll try those varieties.

Jan - I did find a rosemary growing in front of a restaurant here in Arvada, it looked pretty old. I always meant to get a cutting of it but never did, and now it's gone. Too bad, haven't seen any others growing outside around here.

Ed & Barbara - I have trouble growing peppers here too.  I just don't think our summer is long enough. But this year, I'm taking some more of the grassy area, and building a raised bed for peppers and tomatoes in the spot that gets the most sun, on a south-facing hill.  If peppers don't thrive there, it's just not gonna work for me.  Fun that your son enjoys growing with you.

Gretchen - Maybe getting some lights will help you.  I see you hail from the Columbia Gorge area - I grew up in Portland, and my Colorado walls are covered with photos of the gorge.  I'm pretty jealous of you right now!

Joetta, I LOVE basil.  I have a small pot of it on my window iun the kitchen.  The more I pinch off, the more it grows.  And so fragrant, and so yummy to cook with
