From left to right: Jesse Neely of Coronado High, David Yan of Lubbock High and Jett Watson of Monterey High were the highest-scoring Lubbock ISD decathletes during the weekend's Region 1 large school meet in Lubbock. Ben Jackson was Estacado's highest scoring student at the small school's meet in Katy.
Lubbock High Schools took three of the top four spots among large-schools and the top spot among small-schools Friday and Saturday in academic decathlon regional competitions.
Lubbock High, Monterey High and Coronado High finished in first, second and fourth place respectively among seven schools competing in the Region 1 large school meet Saturday at Monterey High, according to the Lubbock Independent School District.
Estacado won 1st place at the small-school meet Saturday in Katy.
Midland Lee won third place among large schools in the regional meet in Lubbock.
With its first place win, Lubbock High receives an automatic birth to the state meet for large schools. Twenty-nine 5A schools in the state and 12 3A schools can win at-large berths to the state meets if they scored high enough in the regional meets.
Despite Estacado’s first-place finish, the Matadors still have to wait to learn results from other regional competitions to know if they advance to state competition.
“We’re still excited about it and proud of them and hoping for the best,” Estacado principal Sam Ayers said.
Results for all large and small schools should be available Monday.
The Estacado and Monterey teams each won first place in the super quiz category.
Estacado has qualified for the state meet for 15 years in a row, and Coronado gone to state for 13 straight years.
Lubbock High qualified last year for the 10th consecutive year, and the Westerners would have made it 15 consecutive years if the 2001 team had not been disqualified because a student was ruled ineligible.
Monterey qualified for state competition for the third straight year in 2011 and has gone to the state meet for 10 out of the last 12 years.
