Not So Big Houses

In browsing through the not so big house again I was struck by a comment the author made about a homeowner who was willing to give up square footage for interesting interior details. I was looking at it because I am working with a client who wants a "not so big house".

The gentleman I wrote about yesterday is such a good example of this--hand plastered decorative archways???? Where are you going to get THOSE today????? The point is, that we rarely surround ourselves with beauty or take the time to appreciate it. Even homes with touches like stained glass windows, artifacts collected from travels, original art or handicrafts often feel like museums or show rooms rather than "homey" spaces that we enjoy being in. I have a really hard time with "McMansions". Granted, they can be a good choice for some people at some stages of their lives but honestly, how much space do most of us really need? How much more satisfying to have enough space to feel secure and cozy and little enough space to have time to curl up with a good book or a good friend and a cup of tea because it didn't take umpteen housrs to clean it!!

This is a very good phenomon that is occuring with the GREEN movement.  Working as an interor designer, I am delighted for the opportunities to use regional craftmen, and artisans to define our spaces and add intrinsic value to our communities.  Energy efficiency and and mortgage crisis has it's upside causing us to reevalute our needs and the beauty around us.

Unbridled consumption is at the heart of our future slums.  LESS is MORE... and increases the value of each purchase.
