If The Shoe Fits... You Damn Better Put It On and Wear It!

If The Shoe Fits...If The Shoe Fits... You Damn Better Put It On and Wear It!  Twelve years ago, I moved from Southern California to Oregon and tried my hand at a new career in real estate.  I didn't know a single soul in Grants Pass except the Realtor who helped me buy my home.  After getting my real estate license, I decided to go to work for her as a buyer's agent.  I had some doubts about our compatibility (she was an arm-twister and I'm a relationship builder), but I said yes anyway.  It took less than a week for me to regret my decision.  The next six months felt like Mr. Toad's Tumultuous Wild Ride.

After coming to my senses and realizing that it was impossible to fit a square peg in a round hole, I resigned.  Unfortunately, I had signed a non-compete, which my Realtor boss (who was also a partner in the brokerage) fully intended on enforcing.  Honoring my word, I was forced to hang-up my license for a year while I burned the clock on the non-compete.  In the meantime, I was unemployed in a small town, where even the locals were lucky to land a minimum wage job.

Fortunately for me, an opportunity presented itself when Gottschalks opened a store in Grants Pass, and I was offered a job as a Manager of the Shoe Department.  After accepting the position, my former Principal Broker made me an offer I couldn't refuse.  If I would agree to come back and work as an independent agent for the same brokerage, my former Realtor boss would tear up the non-compete.  I was delighted, as my passion had become real estate.  I gave notice to Gottschalks, but I agreed to work through the holidays so they wouldn't feel the burden of having to replace me during their busiest retail season.  What happened next proved to be one of the best blessings I received in my real estate career.

One day, an older couple stopped by the shoe department to buy some shoes for their honeymoon.  They explained that they were both widowers about to be married.  I let them know of some special deals the store was having on shoes and luggage and they were very grateful for the extra savings.  I helped them carry the luggage to their car, and on the way out, they told me that when they got back from their honeymoon they were going to buy a home.  They thanked me for my help and I smiled and wished them both well (I could hardly contain myself).

Later that evening, I went to Hallmark and bought a 'shoe' card (similar to the one in the pic above).  I wrote a nice note to the couple and here's what I said... 'Now that I have one foot in the door, I'd love to jump in with both feet and be your Realtor!'  Two weeks later, I got a call from Walt & Sue, saying... 'We want you to come over now and list our home.'  I was ecstatic!

When I arrived at their home, we filled out the paperwork and I thanked them for putting their trust in me.  They said... 'Don't mention it honey... now let's go over to our other home... we want you to list that one too!'  I couldn't believe it... another home?!  I felt like I had just hit the real estate jackpot.  I ended up selling both of their homes and I helped them buy another one together.  With three sales under my belt... from just one Hallmark card... my journey to independence continued.

Some might chalk this fortunate experience up to luckPerhaps.  But, I'd like to think that something special happened that day, allowing some very valuable life lessons to come into play.  Here are some lessons that I've learned along the way...

Lessons Learned from The Naked Blogger

1.  Don't be afraid to be adventurous.  Take risks.

2.  Listen to your gut and never try to fit a square peg in a round hole.  It just doesn't fit.

3.  Be open to opportunities from the most unlikely places.  Seek and you will find.

4.  Be kind to strangers and everyone you meet.  Kindness pays.

5.  Follow-up is one of the keys to success.  People appreciate personal touches.

6.  If The Shoe Fits... You Damn Better Put It On and Wear It!

Ellen ~ That's a very cute title for your business!  Love it!

Lottie ~ I've skinned my knees and scraped my elbows with a few falls along the way... but's its been worth it!

I do... Cynthia.  This past Christmas, I received a card from Sue telling me that Walt had passed away.  I cried.  They were such a beautiful pair... he will be missed!

Thank you Shannon... I've always believed in following my heart and pursuing my passions :)

John from the Q... doesn't mind a cuss word or two ;)

Thanks Robby... it's the personal touches that matter.

I have Richard Yates to thank for my video Jill.  He surprised me with it on my 50th birthday!

I love this story, not only because it turns out to have a happy ending (who doesn't love those?), but also because it showcases your personal character. Your decision to not leave your employer in the lurch during the holidays, and your commitment to providing stellar customer service during those last few weeks for an employer you weren't going to continue with, speak volumes about the kind of person you are. Karma has a way of coming around, and I'm glad yours came around so quickly!

Mel,

I love this story, and we share an identical mindset, which I echoed your sage advice.  Synchronicity is happening constantly in the universe, isn't life amazizng.  I am suggesting. A

Thank you kindly Marti... that means a whole lot ;-)

I love happy endings Mary!  I've always believed in providing excellence in everything that I do.  Because of that, all of my previous employers have left the door open for me to come back.  That feels real good!  Thanks for your sweet thoughts!

Life is totally amazing Alexandra... and I continually look forward to all its possibilities!  I can't wait to meet you in person... I think we'll have a fabulous time sharing stories.  Soon!

Well done smart cookie. I think you really were in the right place at the right time. Gary Woital has a cool blog on that topic today. How smart to use the "shoe, and foot in the door" as a natural follow up.  Love ya Mel.

From one smart cookie to another Debb... I felt pretty fortunate to be in the right place at the right time.  Someday, I'll write a post about the fortune I made off of a few fortune cookies ;)

Oh, Mel~yet another reason why I adore you! Hard to explain, but my journeys through your delightful (and positive and uplifting) life always teach me great lessons and it's all based on real happenings. Your life really IS a book waiting to be written. I would have loved this couple and am so glad that you all embraced each other. Do you still know them?

Sharon ~ I was the fortunate recipient of kindness that day.  I don't know why this sweet older couple trusted a newbie with three very important sales... but I'm sure glad they did!

I'm glad you were smiling Dawn... I was smiling too as I was sharing some very fond memories of my humble beginnings in real estate :)))

Sometimes I feel like you've been on some of these journeys with me Gayle... my kindred friend ;)  I'm glad you delight in them as much as I do... I've had a Wonderful Life!  I hope you're doing well after the loss of Derl... he sounded like a very sweet man.  The older gentleman in my story (Walt) passed away during the holidays... I'm sad too ;(

Ditto on great story and well thought out, perfect thank you card. As for your lessons learned, I can't agree with more. It is amazing how simple decisions become when you listen to your gut. Also, I should tell you the joke about the FOO bird and if the shoe fits but that is another story. cheers cvc

Hi Mel, I absolutely love this story! I am a firm believer that things come along just at the right time..now many would have let time lapse and think fondly of this couple...but you DID take that leap by sticking those clad toes in the water and asking for business..in such a clever way. It's also so true to go with your gut..I didn't a while back when I had a business partner who didn't have the same work ethic as I...and it ended miserably. Cheers to your adventurous spirit!
